Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Applying at Verizon

I’ve applied for a job at Verizon. Thought it was a good and strong company until I saw what people are posting on this site, and to tell you the truth I;m fairly confused now. I understand that this is a site where people post anonymously and there has to be a certain level of exaggeration present . So I ask a simple, honest question: are things really as bad as the folks on this board claim they are?

Put your big boy pants on OP! People here are whining. It is a Whining Board. There are many companies here with many people complaining. But we are much better paid for our complaining and have really good benefits too. And one day if your are lucky enough to make it on to the V Team and are able to understand the business and do the do, then maybe one day you can come here to and complain. We are the best paid, best-educated whiners on the layoff dot com. Just sayin. So pull your pants on and either get to work or go somewhere else and get paid less.

I have to be honest, this company was a great company for my 25 years I spent here. The best thing I did was take the package and "retire". The company is not the company it was and it became a toxic environment in wireless. I am now with a young company making the same amount with a phenomenal work environment and good people who all want to be there! I dont pay a dime into medical and Im happy for the first time in a long time. I wish tou the best on tour search. It took me 4 months to find something that fits like a glove!

I can only speak for myself. I joined Bell Atlantic in 1998 as a COT. Moved over to the test center, then 1st level manager and was able to transition over the the Wireless side of the business 10 years ago. I have been fortunate to have had good to great managers along the way. Learned alot along the way and was able to get my associates and bachelors because of tuition assistance. I have always been treated good and respected for what I do. Is there BS?.....of course , everyone job has it! Are there slackers who dont pull their own weight?.....you bet. I try not to worry about anything but doing the best I can every day. I realize that Verizon is not the company it was 40 or 50 years ago with pension and health benefits for retirees.....but what company is. However, I get paid good and have been afforded opportunities that most people in telecom dont get. Make it what you want.....just because you accept the job doesn't mean you can't walk if you aren't happy.

Run away! They will ruin your life. When you most need them they will turn on you and sc-ape back every morsel of money they can. The benefits s—. You can work in other places and get a pension to retire on with health care. At Verizon all you get is your 401k, no health benefits, and a measly 25% off your phone bill if they don't take that away too. Used to be 50 percent. Oh and you have to use employees help line to do all your cell transactions. you can't go in the store and they are only open certain hours. Good luck! Basically, if you like being treated like trash this place is for you.

If it is a Finance job all you do is create excel spreadsheets all year long. Especially in Basking Ridge FP&A.

It's a job. It can feel bad to be at Verizon if you've been around long enough to remember the way that the company used to be, but as a new employee just go in with minimal expectations and you'll probably be fine.

If you need a temp job, take it. But there is no future. Grab the experience and the knowledge and move on.

Take it easy and just coast? Are you joking? Good luck getting to retirement in this meat grinder of a company. They churn out layoffs quarterly now. Coasting to retirement at Verizon is so 2005. This is 2019 where its cut, cut, cut.

I doubt this is real, but I'll give you my honest opinion...

Verizon is a good, solid job, but I think it's more of a stepping stone than a destination unless you're looking for a place to take it easy until you retire. You'll get what you give and they'll always ask for more. Learned a lot and was able to come out with a much better job, so I don't have too much beef with the company. There are a lot of folks coasting by. Displaying competence or ability is rewarded with additional responsibility, which almost feels punishing at times and unless you push and fight they will not reward or recognize you for it.

If you have any other offers, I'd take that before anything in telecom. If you're looking for a place to take it easy until retirement or just coast, Verizon is an amazing choice. As others have said though, if you're looking at the IT organization I'd steer clear. There is something very wrong (and questionable) about that organization.

If you get an interview and then the second interview goes well, and then they make you an offer, why not take the job? Especially if you don't have to move. You'll have nothing to lose. IF you find you don't like the job you can at least get good Benefits until you leave.
