Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Job I Was Let Go From Was Reposted

Talk about a slap in the face. I was let go during the first wave of layoffs...I gave them several years of my life, often doing the work of two people because my group's turnover was so high, for my position to be supposedly eliminated. I'm still trying to find a job and it's almost August...sub pay is gone, unemployment is about to be gone. I'm job searching and what do I see? My old job on their website. I actually cried. I've been struggling with depression and my self-worth, and now this. Why was I even laid off in the first place, it's not like I made a ton of money?

Same here. I was let go in May and my position was reposted within a week. I applied for it but have heard no response. I guess they don't want to pay my old salary.

Same deal going on in corp actions. They laid off a bunch of people and the remaining team couldn't keep up with the work so they re-staffed the positions - most likely below what they were paying before. Then they sent a group wide email out to get volunteers from other teams to help do the work as overtime while the new people were being trained. So one mistake leads to multiple groups being stretched to their limits. It's like they don't think when they go through with these staff actions...

If you were otherwise happy with your job at BNY, have you considered applying for the re-posted job? Surely you would qualify, and maybe you could even get a raise.

My department has a similar situation. A person did an amazing job with critical work, and had no single backup, yet was not protected from layoff. Their manager was taken by surprise when the worker was let go (yes, it happens that way). Too bad there was no way to correct this action. Without knowing all and exactly what the person did, it’s been impossible to replace the worker instantly, or with a single other worker. Everyone is upset. Ideally, we could revoke the layoff or repost the job, and ask the worker to apply (and maybe get a raise). But alas, there is no budget so no remedy.

Just another case of people and productivity suffering due to BNYM bad policy.

The company is one of the worst if not the worst employer in the sector. This is widely known and no amount of window dressing will cover that up. The Executive are afraid of Scharf and are prepared to go aganst their moral compasses out of greed for $. This is truely something they should all be ashamed of and demonstrates some on the worst traits of human nature.

I know it's hard, and I know you will prevail. There are lots of jobs out there but you may have to take a step back or even try another field. Get down to the skills you have and apply them to another line of work, outside of banking if need be. You are a very valuable person - it's not your fault, it's BNYM's fault they cannot manage a company or people. Remember, you determine your self-worth! Step out of your comfort zone, start fresh in a new industry/field. Drop by a CareerLink office and ask for help. Stop by your local library, use their computers - just so you are around people. It's hard - I've been there a couple of times. You can do this. YOU CAN!

If position was eliminated how can the position be posted. This doesn't sound legal? Anyone have a comment on this?

I am sorry for what you are going through. You need to work your contacts to find a job. Going on a website, applying, etc. just doesn’t work any more. You need to get your resume into the hands of a HR rep or manager. Nowadays it is tough to find a job. Lots of competition out there. I hear Aug 19 is going to be a big day for layoffs company wide. I know you are going through a tough time I was there during the financial crisis. Keep your head up and in due time you will realize this is a blessing in disguise.

BNY let go a lot of people in positions they thought were not needed, but then found out they were needed after all. Then reposted positions to fill them. Remember, we are all just a number, they don’t give. a rats a.....s about any of us. Don’t take it personally, you were just a number as we all are. Put BNY in the rear view mirror. Focus on your strengths and knowledge and when interviewing, sell sell sell yourself! We all underestimate just how good we are! This is just a bump in the road. You lived before BNY and will flourish after them! Good luck to you and everyone on this site!

It happens to the best of us. Don't let that define you. Get an entry level job and work your way up. Unfortunately, that's reality. If you do not have a college degree and you are over 40 it will be very hard. Work an entry level job at a bank and a night job to help pay expenses until you can work your way up again at the day job. You just have to make it work somehow and pay those bills in the meantime. Grab a temp job, sign up with an agency - do whatever you can to make it work.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Don't think it will make you feel better, but I was released in January. I've struggled quite a bit with my mental state too. I've been so shell shocked by the entire situation; I've decided to do a complete 180 and change careers to an entirely different field of work. Def didn't make a lot of money by any stretch and exceeded expectations most years. Wasn't allowed to this past year. My appraisal read like an EE but was an AE. I'm one of the outliers on appendix C or whatever it's called, meaning younger than 35. I wish you the best of luck, and please know that you are not alone and this too shall pass. Take care.

Bnym is a disgraceful, shameful, cheap, dump run by imbeciles. Don’t think their actions are a reflection of you.

Keep your head up. There's not much we can say that will make it easier. These companies and institutions don't care. All we can do is try to survive the best we can. There is no other way and we had the misfortune of trying to do the best with the times we were born in. I look at everything and think it should be this hard.
