Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Have heard a rumor that a second wave of RA's could start today, anyone else have info?

I've heard from 2 IBMer's that they have odd meeting scheduled for today with their managers (with no details in the meeting invite, no subject/topic, and short notice– the invites came in last night & this morning). In both cases, when the IBMer asked the manager about the meeting, their managers would not share details and simply stated that they would discuss it on the call.

Am wondering if this is the beginning of the rumored 'wave 2' that was discussed back in June after the first 2019 wave hit.

Anyone have info on this?

Yes

With the new standard for all package, you are now seeing many of the best people leaving IBM for Google, MS, Amazon, etc. why stay?

@1tyk - Personally, I wouldn't waste my time and effort trying to get a better severance package. Use the next 90 days to find another job, go on vacation, get some of your personal time back. Use up your PC days. Above all, don't work anymore than you absolutely have to. Use the 90 days in lieu of severance pay.

Saw in an earlier comment that 50 Ann Arbor Watson Health (formerly Truven) got RA'd.
I can't confirm that # yet because I haven't talked to anybody about it yet.. but I was one of the people RA'd... and was told by my manager that there were "Quite a few people being hit today" .... Coming up on my 9 yr anniversary!

@10kYSBo1-1set - Just curious - How do you go about trying to improve what little severance they offered? I was RA'd in June also - same package as the rest. I don't see any way to have a conversation with anyone at IBM who can change this. My attempts to reach out to "HR" were futile. Just some young offshore folks that can only read back transcripts of what they have been told to say. The whole process makes me feel like I have been working for robots.

Think how much money is wasted on leasing office space that nobody even shows up at.
The fact that these locations are kept open just hemorrhaging money away is amazing.
They are in desperate need of the 2 Bob's. (we fixed the glitch)

I am sorry to hear about the new layoffs. I was RAed in June. My last day at IBM is September 4. I am trying to get a better severance package but so far I have been told that IBM decided years ago to give everyone the same package which are not negotiable - 3 months more on the job, and 1 month of pay. After years of stellar reviews and praise from customers, I am being discarded by the company. Obviously I am bitter. I am over 60 years old and it is tough getting another job at this point. I feel for everyone who is in the same boat as me. Good luck.

1mbr. I’m assuming your 100k number is worldwide? IBM US is well below 100k already. The optimum size for IBM is in the 225k head range worldwide That means GTS has to shrink a lot. The outsourcing part of IBM is most likely in the spinoff bullseye If IBM’s new strategy is “enterprise” think Fortune 500, then the channel, scaleout, and a small part of services (TSS) will also get downsized.

All the Red Hat people better not get comfortable. They will not be far behind. IBM will continue to shrink to under 100k. Watch and see.

The Watson name/brand will get retired soon... this my prediction.

It’s an easy equation to solve. 12k of Redhatters in, so 12k if IBM’ers out. If the IBM’ers leaving are older and higher paid vs the Redhatters in, that’s just gravy. IBM abandoned their old strategy (strategic initiatives) and instead bought a new strategy via buying Redhat. If you were part of the old strategy, you may be impacted

Funny how so many people were brainwashed into thinking IBM cloud was doing well.

Confirmed approximately 50 people from Ann Arbor (formerly Truven Health Analytics) got RA'd this morning.

Likely this had to wait for the Red Hat deal to close. These poor souls were doomed the moment that happened. But isn't it interesting that there is apparently not a single person in Red Hat who should be RAd? Well, not while anyone is watching.

Watson Health confirmed RAs.
BS script. And lame package.
I hear it will be every quarter for next two years.

Probably, some of the ICP folks as IBM just announced today that the strategic direction is OpenShift. If you are working in a group doing ICP, I guess you should be concerned.

Well, it is the first Thursday of the month .. same time as the June layoffs. Strange that they would do it twice in one quarter though.

Think about how many IBM products were sold off or how many tools are now defunct.
Several Agile champions sitting around with nothing to do. They are no longer assets, but a liability.
