10kwX2TY-1mbx - ah ageism at it's finest. Just because someone is over 50 and knows frame relay, they couldn't possibly kept up with the latest protocols dreamt up by the wiz kids.

This is not only Cisco. All major high tech companies prefer younger people. Average age at major high tech companies is 32. Cisco is about 35 years old last time I checked. Think about it: old IT skills often are not applicable anymore. You worked on token ring, spanning-tree protocol, frame-relay, ATM etc all that experience is now meaningless. Plus if you are getting older it means you accrue higher pay over the years. Tough to justify as an engineer. Unless you are in a leadership position, hard to main that job. The way I have been doing is that I assume I will get laid off. It means enrolled in training and seeking projects all the time. Very stressful for sure. Welcome to the world of high tech. It can be a nasty field.

When I was LR'd, I was given the demographics for my BU. Looking at the numbers, they very carefully kept the oldest person, let go two of the younger people, and then totally targeted those over 45. When 80% of the people in a BU go are over 45, keeping and old guy and letting the token one or two young guys does NOT cover up age discrimination.

There are a lot of people over 50 left...IN MANAGEMENT. Or are now contractors.

I'm worried that any company is going to think twice about hiring me as other than a contractor due to my age. Unless I want to work at Walmart as a greeter.

I would say the target age, and yes I do mean target is 50....After that, it's touch and go.

Totally agree. They will give projects to younger one, and at the same time tell you that you are not capable – the hint you should leave now...
