Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

BE Rating is BE

BE is no longer for truly bad performance. It is now a QUOTA determined by “differentiating performance” within a group. Meaning, even if you are in a great team, BE is for a person somehow different from the rest. HR even provided managers with training for how to do this.

Our mid-year reviews are now due 8/9 BECAUSE it took HR so long to approve ratings BECAUSE so many managers were reluctant or unable to offer up their BE quota. It got so bad that managers were told by their managers that, if they could not decide, their manager would do it for them.

You will never hear about this from your manager, but I hope that you think about this the next time you blame all managers for all of the problems.

Our worst problems come from bad company policies, right from the top. Requiring managers to insult their good employees with BE ratings is just horrible. There is no justification for this, whatever you call it or how else you describe it.

If BNY thinks this produces improved workers, they are absolutely mistaken. This reduces productivity all around. The manager hates it, the BE employee hates it, and the team that knows a fellow worker was the target (this time) hates it.

And hey BNY: whats bad for us is bad for The Company, too. OUR productivity is YOUR productivity.

When will BNY understand that???

To my knowledge, when I was there, there was no corporate policy stating anything about forced ranking/quota. I would ask for the policy in writing before enforcing or acknowledging it. If they're not willing to provide it, you may have legal grounds to fight enforcing it.

Managers hate this quota. We keep hoping that BNY realizes this is not a productive policy, and that it actually hurts the Company. It only began a few years ago, and could very easily be eliminated.

I wish I’d gotten a BE rating so I could get laid off. I even volunteered. I also know people who got BE but are still here, so it is no guarantee. I guess that should be a relief for those that actuall y want to keep working here.

FYI, yes I know if I don’t want my job, I should go work someplace else. I am working on THAT. Meanwhile, layoff with package would be a nice interlude, that is if I can actually find another job.

To execute your BE ranking it is required to acknowledge the rating in the system. If you don't acknowledge it, it means the system doesn't allow you to process it.
If you get a BE you are at high risk to get laid off in the next rounds. Don't give them the instrument for the upcoming layoffs in their hands freely.
Don't acknowledge a BE rating. Don't let them talk you into this. They can't force you and the rating can't be used to lay you off. You don't risk any disobedience doing this.

I was given a BE for my year end when I had a mental breakdown in the third quarter and was gone the entire fourth quarter. My morale and attitude towards BNY has definitely been impacted. This forced rankings are a joke. I can’t imagine any positives.

BE is “below expectations” and a QUOTA on the mid year and year end performance reviews.

The QUOTA for BE was introduced a few years ago, maybe by our senior leader BE, who once said would prefer to have 8000 superstars instead of the existing 15,000 employees. (This was at an employee engagement town hall, which says a whole lot right there.)

Its not just a rating. BE affects compensation and the option to post out of a position. I don’t know if it affects SUB or other packages if the worker is laid off. It also affects morale and productivity, as indicated in the original post.

This recent policy QUOTA could easily be removed. Managers have been resisting the QUOTA, so BNY leadership knows how much it is hated.

If this policy persists, we know that BNY is aware of the impact and does it anyway.

Bad Company!

When I interviewed with BNYM, I asked, "Do you have Forced Rankings, because they are morale k–lers, bordering on immoral. In fact, they are DISGUSTING."

"Oh, no," I was told. And then... Charlie.

After decades of EXCELLENT reviews, I was deemed BE.

Shame on those who continue to impose this. And again, DISGUSTING.
