Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Can you negotiate better payouts? Can you negotiate longer time to find an internal job? Or a direct placement?

Just wondering if anyone has successfully negotiated a better parting package? Does anyone get an extension on the 45 days? Does the package prevent you from ever working at Cisco again? It might be naive but is there a possibility of being direct placed into another role or getting preferred status when you apply for internal jobs? Is there any good news here?

... Yes, you can return to Cisco. If you return prior to a certain time period you have to repay some of the severance. No you don't get any special treatment looking for internal jobs.

In my personal experience, yes you can return, but returning before the 6 months black list period (or whatever duration your severance package states) is not possible. I had a manager contact me asking if I wanted to return for a blue badge position he was trying to fill and asked me to contact HR to see if I could pay back some or all of my severance package to lift the date restriction on returning. According to HR, it was not possible. I guess anything might be possible if someone high enough wants you to return, but in general terms, no.

Special treatment, again I'd say no. However, the reality is that it's based on your internal network. If the hiring manager for the internal position knows you, or knows someone who knows you who can put in a good word for you that they trust, then yes, you do get special treatment. I know, because that same hiring manager a yr after I was first let go got another req and he told the recruiter to contact me before searching the internet for candidates. I was available and interested and the interview was a mere formality. I was back at Cisco for another 3 yrs before getting impacted by the LR a second time. :-)

I must say, I sure enjoyed banking about 9 months of the combined year's salary in severance and using the accrued, but unused PTO to pay for a couple of nice vacations. Both times Cisco let me go, I found new employment within 6-7 weeks.

I'd come back again just because I like the severance packages compared to other companies. My role keeps me working with current technologies, not the legacy Cisco products, so I don't have to worry about my career stagnating while working there.

just take the severance package and move on... Cisco only cares about stock buybacks, dividends, and acquisitions. Your salary will help cover stock buybacks in 2020.

The 45 days is already and extension on the past 30 day time period. Yes, you can return to Cisco. If you return prior to a certain time period you have to repay some of the severance. No you don't get any special treatment looking for internal jobs.
