This is why, as an apprentice you work every day off that is offered to you. Not call in FMLA once a week! Instead of blaming the Journeyman from Proviso go take a look at the Journeyman at Cal Ave that have been screwing that place for years. The likes of F.M. T.M. F.J. J.R. D.M. R.U. J.M. C.B. B.C. Q.F. All these people would hide a sleep all day and then complain how bad management is! There are foreman still there that did the same and are no better! Its a disgrace. Metra doesn’t want that place cause they know that they then have to keep all those lazy workers.

The apprentices at outlying points are still working though

Nobody “is going to jail”. I’m sorry you apprentices feel this way. Go change a 10b cushion, burn out some rear lugs, rebuild a carrier iron...spend all day on a air test only to change a minor leaking truck mounted piston. Cal Ave had no problem with journeymen because they carry experience. Grunts to the core. 238 will be a breeze for them. I hope you guys find railroad experience soon, but you can’t be mad that journeymen are card carriers. Man up. Btw it feels good to be retired. All day at the racetrack ;)

Its s—s that people got furloughed but honestly comparing freight to commuter it is a toy shop like someone said. The journeyman that bumped into Cal Ave will pick it up in no time. If Metra really cared a out what goes on there they wouldve done something a long time ago. Over half of the current Journeyman Carmen there are nothing more then glorified coach cleaners who think they should just come to work, get paid, and hide inside a car while the rest do their work. The sad par is that the apprentices that Cal Ave hired in the last year or two were actually good, and I wish them all the luck in finding a new job!

Sad part is, those Apprentices were probably eager to learn and perform their duties. Now a bunch of lazy, entitled, apathetic, whiners took their spots just so they can continue crying about how bad the company f-ed them and how they hate their jobs that they got to keep.

"When the FRA find out the journeyman are not qualified to work Cal.Ave. a lot of people is going to jail"

UP is going to push them through 238 as fast as they can. But Metra will be p-ss-d as cars sit in the shop for days for simple repairs that most Apprentices could do in no time at all

As one of those Apprentices, it kind of s—s. The sad part is that we had been hearing the rumors for months that we were going to get cut, but kept getting reassured by Management that those were just rumors. Cal Ave hasn't furloughed in over 25 years which is why n the current world of railroading I thought I'd be safe taking the job.

Such is life... Myself along with the other 27 Apprentices will be alright we had a very talented group from several different industries. However it will be interesting to watch this all play out. As said by some of the Freight guys at one of the union meetings, "Commuter Ops plays with little toy trains, we do the real work".

What about the apprentice carman at outlying points on point based seniority? Do they remain safe?

That's what you pay union dues for, it's called seniority.
