I am the OP.
Thank you all.
Band 5 is described as a 'Lead Technical Support', able to demonstrate these qualities:
Cannon fodder, RA bait, or budget balancing padding.
There is no band 12. Bands above 10 switch to letters : d,c,b,a. Above that it's contracts.
I work alone side some with dual masters who are only band 04 and some with no degree or certifications that are band 07-09. We were always told that IBM does not recognize certs or degrees but only hands on experience. Salary range in US for band 05 is $70k - $90k give or take.
IBM does pay far far less in those depressed communities they opened those delivery centers in.
It's not unheard of for a band 05 to only pull in mid 40's in a ghetto center.
In the US, Band 5 generally indicates someone without a college degree. New college grads are hired as Band 6. A Band 5 would be someone with a 2 year degree or from a boot camp, what Ginni calls "new collar", and would be put in a CIC.
This is from my experience, and for IBM India, not sure the rest of global ops…
IBM bands go all the way from band 3 to band 12.
There may be band 1 and 2, I never heard about them though.
I’d categorize Band 5 as a grade below SME.
Typically folks in this band have about 5 years of experience.
After 5 there is no 6 in GTS here in India.
We have Band 7a which is SME and Band 7b who is a true Manager (like people manager, someone that hires and fires). 7a would be like a junior People Manager. Band 8 is a senior manager here, etc. etc.
