Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Medical Insurance

Does anyone know how the insurance works after you're fired from UP? I heard i could keep paying for it but, then I heard it'll eventually be dropped. Just seeing if anyone TRULY knows the rules.

When i was fired, my ins ended the last day of the month. You were then eligible for cobra in 3 mo.

Dont rely on up's inept hr department to assist you. Youre on your own.

If you get fired you don’t qualify for insurance, if you get furloughed they can offer cobra at extremely high deductibles

They have to offer you the chance to continue your current coverage through COBRA. COBRA is a federal law (consolidated omnibus reconciliation act), so all the big companies and insurance companies have to comply. You can enroll using COBRA for up to 18 months from the date you get laid off. You can get your dental and vision coverage, too.

As the spouse of a furloughed machinist, I can tell you that UP paid 100% of our family's premiums for all (health, dental, and vision) insurances for 3 months. The insurance benefits remained exactly as they were when he was employed. Extended coverage through COBRA will be available for up to an additional 14 months, I think, at a ridiculously inflated amount. For instance, just for our family health coverage, the monthly COBRA premiums were broken down as $758.05 for employee, $758.05 for spouse, and $589.03 for child/ren, or $2105.13 per month for extended family coverage.

Usually any layoff situation (any company)allows you to get the same insurance you had before, but the company no longer helps pay for it. Called cobra. If you can get to UP online still, search for "benefit breakdown" and the top link breaks down the dollar value of your benefits ( for us HQ guys anyway). My single person health plan costs UP $6700/yr. So get ready for a $500+ bill, or more if you are covering the whole family. A change of employment counts as a "life changing event" and you can edit your spouses insurance mid year. Consider that or one of the state plans.
Good luck

You are still covered for 3 months and if you need an extra month it’s 100$ and then it’s gone (union agreement)

If you were fired for misconduct you don’t get anything. If you were fired for other than misconduct, quit, furloughed, laid off you’re eligible for Cobra but only for a few months. And yes, it’s pricey but less than full cost of the plan.

For non-agreement, it ends at the end of the month in which they send you on to better things. You can pay cobra, but it’s like 1200 a month I think.....greedy b–tards...

You should receive a cobra packet if you are Nonagreement. If Agreement I believe you should receive a cobra packet as well to continue coverage. The premium is normally really high though.
