Thread regarding Dean Foods Co. layoffs

Dean Foods Le Mars

Word spreading around that the Le Mars plant could be next to close. Anyone from corporate or management on this board to confirm? By the way. Wells Blue Bunny has been buying Ice Cream plants up like crazy. So any Deans plant that makes Ice Cream could be next....

Plants with the highest payroll will be the first ones to close down.

I’m glad I quit and went to Cargill. I bet Brian and the rest of them are in panic mode.

Poor Brian.... Maybe you should force your wife to go work a second job to make ends meet.

Mike Wells getting ready to buy the plant. That’s the rumor here at corporate in Le Mars. A lot of you will already be crying about extended hours before the ink dries on the agreement.

Dean's is loosing customers left and right, service fee and no credits p-ss-d alot of customers off. Plus they cut down on deliveries to customers. I work in LeMars. It's embarrassing being a milkman. I used to like my job.

Still won't believe any closings are on the horizon until someone provides specifics. Q3 and Q4 earnings still expected to be negative. Costs $ to close plants and more closings would make those earnings even more negative. Still think bankruptcy is likely to happen next year and any closings will be put off until then.

I can 100% guarantee that plant is not, and will not close. Even if Dean's goes bankrupt, someone will buy the plant and keep running it. It's been running on autopilot for months now and still turns decent profits.

Those 12 hour shifts are a k–ler. Almost always sold as being a way for employees to have more days off and then compaines reneging and working employees on most of their days off. Never let your union agree to that BS and if not union and working 12 hour shifts, organize (written by someone who typically has no love of unions).

Better off to go work for Blue Bunny in Le Mars. More stability. Problem is the place is becoming infested with Latinos and Somalis that it would be difficult to communicate. Also. I hear they work 6-7 days a week, 22 days straight. 10-12 hour shifts. Total burnout!!!!

Suggestion would be not to believe any of these rumors unless/until people can provide details.
Company has to provide 60 days notice to employees and to government of any closings/mass reductions. Dean Foods has always given this notice when closing plants. Costly to not give this notice. No notice = having to pay employees 60 days pay instead of notice.
Typically only companies who go bankrupt and close immediately don't give this notice and then employee pay is so low down the list of priorities under the current bankruptcy laws that employees either never see a dime or else years later only get a really small percentage of what they were owed.

Wells already toured a Deans plant in Illinois before settling on their purchase of Fieldbrook Foods. I know. Because I work at the corporate office in Le Mars.

When the ice cream plants (or any other non-fluid business) gets sold, we'll know for sure the end is coming soon.
