Yes they do. Watson Health was nothing but a pretty face to put on their plan to nail down patents in the healthcare space. This explains the failure of Watson for Oncology and their offerings in Imaging that never got off the ground.

At some point the patent portfolio will be spun off to private investors and leave the common stockholders holding the bag.

Like many colleagues , I often contributed to the push to obtain "the most annual world wide patents for IBM." I received more than 30 patents in the process and title of "IBM Master Inventor" numerous times.

I am proud of many of my IBM accomplishments. Patents are not one of them. I knew something was odd when IBM kept inflating each patent I filed into multiple USPTO submissions. It was always the same patent with just one or two paragraphs changed. Eventually I figured out that IBM was patent trolling.

I stopped submitting patents in disgust. IBM retaliated by giving me fewer responsibilities and even tried to co-locate me. I quit soon after. Not exactly what I wanted but I can live with myself now.
