I guess the positive side is that it's supposed to be without job loss... although I would be curious to know how many will take the buyout package instead of transferring.
And otherwise: $9,000 signing bonus... I guess Ford really needed to save some money on the retiree's pension costs to have spare cash to offer as a sweetener...

Electric is a fad, it's a neat toy for people with money, and the Corvette in the driveway. Ford is soooooo behind and it's amazing the garbage they put on the street.
Hillbillies aren't driving anything with a battery ever, it's a truck with a gas or DSL engine. EVs are an appliance like a refrigerator or iPad.

There’s one really big problem with going all electric quickly, not getting the vehicles out there, it’s charging them. The US electrical infrastructure can’t take it without a major upgrade. California can barely keep up with what it has now, let alone the surge energy required when millions of vehicle plug in when they get home from work.

I believe electric vehicles will have a positive impact in many ways and it seems that many who post here agree. There are, however, many who don’t want one and it will take a while before those people purchase one. Maybe they’ll cave when nothing else is available in the market and they can’t find a used gas guzzler. Maybe they’ll hang on to their gas guzzler until it falls apart. The point is that some people resist change of any kind and in the absence of a significant event such as $6 a gallon gas the switch to electric is not likely to occur overnight.

No need to force an electric sale if that is all there is. There might still be a crown vic type vehicle laying around for that person.

The Monte Carlo Wild Card in all of this electrification is the acceptance of electric over ICE vehicles with gas prices steadily declining. You can't force the person sitting across from the salesman on the show room floor to buy electric.

Right now, pure ICE powertrains are being rapidly planned out of existence to be replaced by HEV, and PHEV's. Don't believe it, look on the offerings of any automaker's website for 2020. Once the public gets accustom to driving HEV's and PHEV's will be a short period of time before consumers start to fully embrace BEV's. A sympathetic political party in the US white and congress would make this a realty even quicker. I believe that achieving 30% BEV worldwide by 2030 is a no brainer.

Just keep your head buried in the sand and everything will be ok.

Major changes are coming quickly - watch how many engineers (D&R, Mfg., etc) will be cut as horribly complex old IC powered vehicles are phased out.

How many new engine/transmissions are there in the cycle plan?? Let me know and come back here with the answer.

It will still take a while after it “gets going”. I’ll bet a large percentage of older folks are going to be slow to give up their gas powered vehicles.

This is just the beginning. When the electric stuff realy gets going, there will be no need for so many engine and transmission plants.
