It’s a sad fact in IT and corporation as a whole that once you hit the 50 year mark you’re a target for layoffs (mainly salary related). After a wave of layoffs, I had to retire from another company at 63 and couldn’t get another job (interviews became more difficult, couldn’t handle timed coding tests, and there were key technologies I didn’t know that popped up after 3 year period). I spent 38 years in IT and only survived that long because of going back to school at night to advance my skills several time and moving several times.
In the end I didn’t bother because I was only going to work another 5 years (only made it for 3 years).
