This post is just to encourage anybody facing the sudden prospect of resignation / layoff, that life after BNYM is INCREDIBLE!
I left BNYM a few months ago, after forcible attempts to change my role. At the time, I was in shock, and couldn’t believe that this was the reward for “exceeding expectations”.
Fortunately, I had been building a small business alongside work, which started as a fun hobby. Unbeknownst to me, this would replace my BNYM income, when faced with the “no-choice” decision of a new role. I now work half the hours for the same take-home.
I say all this to say…BNYM (unknowingly) provides the opportunity / environment for us to advance study, business plans, job applications…alongside work.
My advice:
Stick to a regular work schedule i.e. 8-5 / 9-6 (whilst getting the job done), this makes it easier to discreetly and quietly plan interviews / run a business.
Actively use lunchtimes / breaks to think about what you want next - if needed start taking in a personal iPad / laptop.
If you have the time or energy after work…progress with job applications, personal study, a side hustle…and be disciplined about it - this is your future…your escape plan.
Immediately consider other passive income streams…i.e. AirBnB, renting a spare room, dividend stocks. I had to honestly ask myself…is any of your income protected from the whims of BNYM?
If faced with a sudden curve ball by BNYM, research the legalities of your situation…even the slightest (most tactful) suggestion of this knowledge in your exit letter / discussion with HR will give you more control/power in your exit.
Lastly, leave on your own terms - hopefully in a much better position.
I hope this is encouraging to someone.
Best of luck
