Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

How safe am I?

Hey guys. I started working for a xerox owned business about 4 months ago. We seem to do really well in our area. I just found this site and I keep reading about HCS and XBS layoffs. Seems as though it’s all doom and gloom here. I really like my job, but this site is making me second guess my decision. Should I feel secure in my job?

The safest answer to that question is that you are never safe at any company. Enjoy your job while you’re there but always keep your resume updated and keep yourself marketable. Look for opportunities that offer transferable skills & avoid positions that stress skills specific to that company. Get additional training, certification or degrees (preferably at your employer’s expense) that will enhance your marketability. There is no more job security. Your career is yours to manage.

Do not count on any personal loyalty from anyone. They might go to lengths to protect you but in the end that will have a list and they will execute it.

To 1jab ... Sad you are unable to see there are still many good parts of Xerox. Product engineering in Webster is still thriving, even after many years of uncertainty. Obviously healthcare benefits s—, and raises have not been what they used to be.

As long as you like your job and you aren't getting underpaid relative to the industry, there is no reason to give in to the doom and gloom comments here. This depends on your skill set and how marketable you think you are. Speaking only as an engineer, I am certain from the connections I have I could get a job with similar pay in a week, however vacation would be hard to match anywhere if you are a long term employee.

The writing is on the wall in some areas of Xerox, but not mine. Anything can change in an instant though. As always, look out for yourself first.

Misery loves company, so many of those in XBS and XIM want the rest of us to believe we are next. Don't believe it, but go with your gut. I feel for those who have lost their jobs, sadly this happens at nearly every company. It's best for your health to grieve your loss, and move on. People always say they ended up with something better.

@11Vd2GgT-1hvj Is a fake post from someone pumping up the company or a clearly low IQ employee. Every facet of Xerox has been affected with dramatic changes this last year. Everyone tenured has been running towards the door or pushed out the door. This includes ”highly paid” sales and management people that wouldn’t leave unless the sky was falling, which it is. Unless you’re in your early 20’s and just looking for “experience”, this company has no career path forward with any sort of longevity. Look at Xerox as a job, not a career.

There are a lot of very bitter people on this site. I’m not trying to judge them or their experiences because people are in different situations. Ive been an employee for a very long time and Xerox has treated me very well. I really like my job too. Are they perfect? No. But I think a lot of the changes that are being made right now are necessary and make a lot of sense. So I would say if you like what you are doing and the people you work with and for, then stick with it.

Depends on the unit you are in. In IT, target was $460M and they are only at $104M. That’s roughly 6000 layoffs by end of year. If you are in a unit that’s already met the cutting target you may be safer.

I second the "grain of salt" response. There are a lot of bitter people here, for good reason. Many people have lost their jobs or have been rebadged to HCL. But many more, who don't post here, enjoy their job and are safe, at least as safe as you can be in this industry.

If you like your job, and your co-workers, and your pay/benefits, keep doing what you are doing. Always look out for yourself though. If something better comes along, consider it. Your loyalty is with you and your family, not Xerox.

Take what people say on here with a grain of salt. Some are angry and bitter. Some have a right to be like myself. Like many huge companies who’s revenue is declining because their present and past leadership hasn’t adjust to market demand & changes, Xerox is one of them. Kodak failed to adapt to a digital age too late. Xerox is and has been struggling to be innovative with it’s business model. It’s trying to but it can’t sit on it’s printing cash cows forever. There will always be a need for printers but that demand is shrinking in this digital age. It sees that and recognizes it needs to change. Hopefully, it will keep the area’s that show growth and opportunity employed. And INVEST in areas of growth and transition employees that are valuable, which I don’t think it sees that. Instead Just a big dollar figure that nibbles at potential revenue. I believe there are way too many chiefs and not enough Indians at Xerox. But the Indians are the first to go.
How Xerox treats it’s employees is another thing. Instead of laying off with a package, in a lot of cases their converted to HCL or other contract employees. At that point there basically pieces of meat that can be disposed of at any time or when their contract is up. Usually 6 months to a year. Contract folks are usually, but not always, the first line of defense when salary reduction comes around. Always keep networking and don’t be too complacent at Xerox. Long are the days when you stay with the same company for most of your career.

Sorry but you should never assume you are “safe”. These times are long time gone. Always look for your next move internally or externally and always have plan B in place. Amen.
