Conductors, get your degrees and build your resumes

UPOnline article says the railroads are suing SMART to put crew sizing in the next contract negotiations. So, y’all got about 3 years to be employable in a different industry.

The NCCC has sued on at least three different occasions (not including appeals) to try to force the crew consist issue into national negotiations. They've failed every time – the courts have repeatedly ruled that crew consist is an issue to be negotiated at the General Committee level. I'm not saying one-man crews isn't going to happen, just that legal precedence is against them in trying to force this down our throats in one contract.

UPs goal is 40% cut in conductors. I'm in Omaha.

The fun is being made of those that can’t write elementary school English and make fun of those that can. How ridiculous is that?

I think what the guy was saying about degrees is that he or she didn’t obtain a online degree. I knew a coworker that used to have his wife do his homework while getting his online degree. If someone considers Phoenix a real degree well then I guess Santa clause is real too. lol! Have fun in la la land!

It’s from an actual university, not a actual university. Apparently, the Phoenix guys are doing better.

I too have a bachelors degree. Also it’s not from University of Phoenix it’s from a actual university. I am not worried a bit many of my coworkers are educated as well and smart enough not to pursue management opportunities with this company knowing how awful it is.

i have my degree from 20 years ago, as do a lot of my coworkers. I know many think we’re all uneducated and this is the best we can do. I haven’t seeked out career opportunities within UP, because I see how they completely own you if you are nonagreement. I’ll finish my time for however long and move on, it’s not the end of the world. I have 6 months income saved back for exactly this reason, good luck to all and I hope we all stop trying to bring each other down.

Not everyone needs to go to college. We spend all this time teaching calculus and Shakespeare to people who would be much happier and more productive learning trades. This country is so short on skilled crafts and although it takes a while, there’s money to be made in the trades outside the railroad.

Even if the conductor position isn’t eliminated, if you are young you should be trying to get your degree and leave anyway. Unless you want to do thirty more years at the worst company in America. That goes for everyone at UP not just conductors.

Unfortunately the Conductor position will be eliminated as that of the telegraph operator.
If your a Conductor find a new job unless you are a 20 year employee because it’s about to get serious as far as jobs eliminated. It’s a race to 0 other positions and crafts will be eliminated as well. Less Conductors means less CMS crew Callers, Less time keepers, less. HR, less managers etc. Those of you that think it’s funny not so fast because the cuts could effect you as well.
