We been seeing rails installed on the main lines from Japan since 2014.
Overpriced, obsolete, old, entitled union workers who think the world owes them something.
And I see that I was correct @oow.
Less than two hours from the time of posting some conspiracy nutter ranting about "globalists" came out of the woodwork. My next prediction: the mods take the thread down in less than 24 hours.

Well...the US has diminished capacity to produce the product because of globalist outsourcing schemes cooked up by some coastal think tank..
We've outsourced damn near everything in the name of profits...we don't make much any more, God help us if we ever find ourselves in a serious conflict.
OP: Lots of things. Here's a few:
1) The US doesn't have the workforce or the facilities.
2) Where the US does have a workforce and some facilities, it produces an inferior product at a higher cost and at a slower pace that doesn't meet the demand.
3) The tariffs made purchasing Chinese steel too expensive. With US producers unable to meet domestic demand (see item #1 and item #2), US firms were forced to turn to other sources.
It's only a matter of time before this thread is swamped with people claiming that all of these given reasons are elitist BS cooked up in some coastal think-tank, but they really aren't. This is simple economics.
