Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Sears & JCP sinking Target posts record revenue

So... This quarter target posted record revenue. If you were to believe EL he would tell you that all his problems have to do with Amazon and maybe Walmart... But yet Target is posting records. Target does not have an online presence much stronger than Sears, nor is it very price competitive with Walmart so that cannot really be it.

News for eddie, I think it has to do with shopping experience, product selection and overall just keeping up with retail trends. When I was a kid my grandma used to buy me stuff from the sears catalog, clothes mainly. Unfortunately back in the 80s I only wore those clothes when my grandma was around, it was quite embarrassing if I had to wear them to school. Fast forward 30 years and the last time I was in sears I had nostalgic memories of the stuff my grandma used to buy... But not because it was sears but because the shelves were still stocked with the same fashions!! Now they say all good trends come back in style.. but Im thinking they never went out of style in sears. So, im not shopping there and my grandma is dead so there went one of sears' last customers.

And then well there is the fact that the stores themselves are mostly dark and dank and for the most part probably have the same layout and furniture as they did in the 80s.

Poor sears, a hundred years of great history weighing it down like a boat anchor.

By the way.. calling your customers "members" with that silly SYW program is almost insulting to your customers. This is not a membership, you are not part of an exclusive club. All you need is a telephone, its nothing different than the vons club... Do they still have that? Most grocery stores around here dropped the silly club card junk a long time ago. I am a Costco member, not a sears member.

I would not count jcp out yet. Yes they need to shrink their store count. Close stores that dont have a chance. Yes they have massive debt. But the new CEO has hired some smart people to try and at least make a difference. Ie target and Macy's and Macy's execs in the c suite. Most of their fleet of stores were remodeled during the ron johnson era. The one by me is clean and neat and has good deals. All it takes is a few tweaks and getting the online pickup stuff right. What is eddie doing? Same old same old eddie. Shut and never change anything about the stores environment.

JC Penney was actually the #1 retail website on every search back in the day, but then Google caught them gaming the PageRank algorithm and pretty much hit them with the death penalty and that was the end of that. Google had too much power even back then, almost 20 years ago. Censorship matters, and Google is more powerful than any government.

My target recently received a remodel. What a nice store. Love the new layout. Always well stocked. People working on the floor to assist you. Nice online pickup entrance. Very busy. Doesnt feel like your shopping at a discount store anymore. Yes prices on some things are higher. They get it. Eddie was too narcissistic to understand it's all about the experience. Why would anyone shop at old dated kmart and sears stores with their leaking ceilings, broken floors, empty shelves etc. At least the end is coming soon.

Calling customers members is so stupid. Except for the people who came up with the idea, Most workers have always agreed that it makes no sense at all and was another super dumb idea.

@zck has it right. The issue with Sears is, and has been, management. They are stuck on a model that went away years ago and refuse to let go of it. Had the right people been in place, clothing and other nonsense would have went away years ago.
Sears sold off the Craftsman name, which was basically like waiving a white flag and giving up. Imagine if Burger King sold off the "Whopper" name. It was just really so far beyond stupid. Initially I felt like maybe it was a ploy to try and get the buyer to go ahead and buy Sears. But SBD doesn't need Sears at all.
Since then, Sears has burnt practically all of their vendors and nobody will touch them. They have screwed over so many people to where they cannot even get appliances to sell. Also, I notice the complete lack of lawn mowers. Go to the website and look, they have NONE. Sears carried the consumer market for mower forever and now have none. They have some chinese import hand held items and nothing else.
Still though, all this goes back to Alan Lacy. If ever there was a man that needed his arse kicked, it's Lacy.

JC Penney is in the same boat as Sears: a fossilized old department store that's still trying to operate like it's the 1980's. They just have the advantage of having corporate bosses who are actually able to find their a55es with both hands and a flashlight.

I agree Kmart and Sears are horribly mismanaged, but so is their website. I shop there frequently and it constantly has stock outs, it's hard to locate products, it floods you with offers from eBay half the time, and almost all of my orders come with minor to major damage from shipping (or the item was in poor condition to begin with and the fulfillment associates don't care) or I just get completely the wrong thing. Then, not only does it take an hour to set up a return, but the thing is out of stock for a replacement and you lose your SYW points if you return it. It's a sh-show. Taret.com is growing, but even now it is smooth with fast checkout and speedy, free delivery, and I like that the 5% from their card comes off as cash up front instead of waiting for points. Target stores are clean and well stocked, and I believe Target does the smart thing and uses existing stores as mini fulfillment/return centers for the online side, which is a great way to economize that existing real estate. I think that brick and mortar shopping still has tons of downsizing to do, but Target seems to be genuinely interested in right-sizing and synergizing both its brick and mortar and online presences instead of piddling around trying to make an extremely dated business model work in the modern era like Sears.
