Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

It’s not worth it

I never considered myself a quiter, and I’ve been with the company in some hard times, but at this point working for UP under these conditions is not worth it. Whatever you do, and no matter how hard you work, you are always in danger of being cut or furloughed. Our team has been basically split in half by layoffs, and all the remaining work has been dumped on us that remained. The way I see it there are two things that could happen to us. Either we get laid off or we get stuck with the amount of work that a person can’t handle. In any case it s—s for us. Leaving under my own terms, even for a lesser paying job, doesn't seem bad to me at this point.

Remember it's easier to find a job when you already have one. Then there is no question if you will go back when you get called back

Retirement is only safe for those who make it and if you do make it most railroaders barely live long enough to enjoy it (5-8 years for sticking it out at a job that’s nothing but stress and misery for 20+ ain’t nothing to brag about). when you look at the big picture yes at this point most are just holding on till the next round of cuts so they can finally move on with their lives and enjoy the things they sacrificed for years since most people left have at least 8 years in (which even if the new jobs pay isn’t up to par with unkle petes wages after everything taken out of your checks, it really doesn’t matter since the lowest craft makes little over 17 an hour and most jobs have overtime you could technically still break even, will it be easygoing find no but there’s something out there I’m sure). Trust if there ever was any will never return to a company like unkle pete (those that trust this company to begin with you’re extremely trusting). Hope is just one lay-off away for some and pulling the ripcord yourself is just as easy for others so do what you need to keep your sanity.

15 years in. They pay me to do a job. I do my job the best I can at the pace I can handle. And I know I can go home after 12. I leave work at work so it don't destroy my home life. So as long as I have a check come in on the 10 and 25 I good. Once that check is late or it bounces I will go flip burgers then to make ends meet. I am content and have the understanding of what the company is doing. I don't have an understanding of what the union is there for. That who you should be asking. Why are we paying them. Figure up what you pay them for a year then add that up in you total work history till retirement. They fighting for work rules. They 1.6 you miho. There ain't no work rule agreements. And so on. The union betrayed their members along time ago when they expanded their duties to other crafts to get their money. Sheet metal to bus to. Forget about the rr union they can't strike any more. Time to go somewhere else they said. Even though record profits for the rr in the last 15 years. And not keeping up with the times. Hiding inflation rates along the way. Most places offer 401k match better pay. And so on. So when I feel like it I will highball on the way out singing oh happy days oh happy days. Till then my brothers I be singing that ole railroaden blues by Shane Terrell

All union jobs are seniority based, the youngest get cut when business slows. I was bumped, cut and forced out of town throughout my career, if you haven’t consider yourself lucky. That’s part of railroading, if someone told you different then they were lying to you. Some people can handle it, some can’t, I hung in there and now I’m living comfortably on railroad retirement while the ones that quit are mowing lawns or picking up sticks trying to make ends meet. The choice is yours.

Employees look for a company you can trust and vice versa. A company looks for an employee they can trust. At this point, all trust is lost. When all trust is lost, it’s time to move on to an employer you can trust. In the beginning, UP was a trusted name in job security. Not any more and maybe never again.

I hate to tell everybody but generally when companies start getting rid of people it's always the most recent hired. Why get rid of seasoned workers that have been there years when they have way more knowledge than someone starting out. Up does suk so does every company start a business and work for yourself.

UP was not the beginning of time. A job is a means of survival. Corporations are out for profit. Unions are the working persons best means to get a fair shake out of their work. Corporations sometimes show their true colors and it hurts but we just have to move on.
