HeWhoCares are you an IT Manager?

The going rate for a Principal Java Developer is 200k+ in Atlanta. A good Java Developer can achieve this distinction in 6-8 years of progressive hard work. Usually this person would have a Computer Science degree NOT an Information Technology degree, usually both BS & MS.
The going rate for new college hire with CS degree is 85-100K. (Source is my colleagues salaries).
The Atlanta market is very competitive and annual increases of 15% are awarded to the good developers.

There is an unfortunate situation where many companies have alternative IT staffing solutions which lowers self reported salaries on Glassdoor.

If you are a good Java Developer or aspire to be one, you need to be around developers of a high caliber. Sad to say friends I have in Ford FCG program are not in that situation. Many leave after a year of doing nothing. I have helped two start over so I know they were earning 65K-70K before leaving. That is ok if you want to just collect a paycheck. The longer you lot rot, the harder it will be to get a good career.

Ford Credit IT has been quietly releasing IT programmers and project managers over the last months. The majority contractors but not all.

There were some reductions in the last couple months. They were managements positions in Body.

LL6 and above seem to be much easier for the company to target.

A simple Glassdoor Salary search shows a range of $68k -$123k , with an average of $94k for IT Manager in Atlanta, GA, experience ranging from zero to 20+ yrs. $175k w/ 6 yrs seems to be an exception!

Some advice from someone who was SRD’d. Keeping your head down and working, getting great performance reviews, being productive and helpful, working long hours... none of that will save you from being released if your “type” (it varies each time) is in the cross hairs. Invest in yourself and keep marketable skills so that you’ll bounce back quickly if it happens. Ford has many positions that are only pertinent to Ford. Avoid those positions if possible because you will quickly lose the marketable skills that other companies value. In addition, knowing you have marketable skills will ease some of the worry we all feel when there are rumors or actual announcements of head count reductions. While I did love my job at Ford life after SRD is so much better than I expected.

@12J1pxkS-1lnz the job at Fords is Java Developer. The job in Atlanta is Java Developer. Same day to day work, except Fords has many mandatory useless meetings and other red-tape.
Only HR or management could say “ Ford is competitive pay/benefit wise” with a straight face.
It is a common ploy, yet the UM survey of my son’s class shows IT professionals making well over 100k with six years experience in TX, CA, OR, WA, NV, UT, CO, MO, SD, ND, IA, IL, NC, SC, FL, OH, PA, NJ, NH, NY, MA. So yeah sure, Fords is competitive with IT salaries.

The problem at Fords is there is massive group think leading employees down the same bad paths repeatedly. If you fight against the mass of groupthinkers, you run a high risk of frustration, sabotage, persecution, derailment and failure. But if you join the group thinkers, you will become stupid and possibly unmarketable for your next career jump. Take your pick.

Highly doubt there are similar level - GSR positions that are paying 175k outside of Detroit unless were talking West Coast Silicon Valley where 175k don't buy much.

Ford is competitive pay/benefit wise

Congrats @12J1pxkS-rxl !!
You speak the truth about Fords underpaying IT workers.
When my son graduated from UM with IT degree six years ago, I was upset that he did not get a job offer from Fords. He got an IT job in Atlanta instead. After six years he now earns 175K and jobs are plentiful. I am a GSR 8 at Fords with 32 years of IT experience at Fords. My salary is 110K.
Now I am glad my son did not get a job offer from Fords.

@12J1pxkS-kfq they hire in more than they need so when the next cut occurs they can again cut the senior highly compensated with a pension, along with some of the people they just hired. It has been a long running game. After 2008 there was actually an increase in positions in area I was in. Our director admitted it was so they would have easy targets to cut.

Anyone who thinks their job is safe is a fool. Save your money and make your plans to exit and go somewhere you are appreciated and fairly compensated.

Congrats on getting out of Michigan! I look at the glassdoor average salary for engineers and software developers on the East and West Coast and other up coming cities in places like VA and TX and am just flabbergasted at how poorly Ford (and GM) pay for those positions. Truly the only folks who put up with the low pay and constant threats of layoffs and firings are those who are either too lazy to look for better jobs at other companies or are too incompetent to hold onto a job anywhere else. In any case, congrats on getting a pay raise and moving out of this s***hole state. At least now you won't get ticketed for going 5 mph over the speed limit on I-94, or get lead or chromium cobalt poisoning from drinking the local water (we made the national news again for our contaminated water supply -yay!)

When the layoffs happened in 2009 (or was it 2010) they were followed by more layoffs the following year. They likely won’t do that again while still converting agency and posting external positions. The layoffs after 2008 really were about cutting costs because that was a dark time. They were not hiring then.

The layoffs this year were not about cutting costs, it was about cutting older employees who were about to get a pension or hit a pension milestone. It appears they were also after people with higher salaries than their peers which explains why we saw some really impressive people go. If they need to cut payroll costs they’ll stop hiring new people because they have purged people with higher salaries and those nearing a healthy pension.

Don’t worry. Enjoy your holiday break.

More useless rumors to stir the pot. I left a year ago on PRP and had sources that knew the folks that were planning the firings - the process went on for 16 months until the event actually occured.

The process to identify canditates, get approval up the chimneys, and ulitmately board approval does not happen quickly.

Keep your head down and keep working.

Will be an interesting year and with more years of uncertainty to follow.

These BEV are not a sure thing - profit wise and these local OEMs need profits going forward.

IMO these next 5 years will put most in the local auto industry on edge - it's not going to be fun.

Cut your debt, save for a rainy day.

Good luck to all.

I was part of the SRD in May 2019. I received a call on my drive home saying, BTW, today was your last day and when can you return your badge? A bit insulting that all they cared about was the badge and not me.

I was unemployed for 5 months. For every 50 jobs I came across, only 1 was local and those jobs were for less than what I made at Ford. Because GM did their layoffs 6-8 months prior to Ford, they (GM) got the available local jobs. With Ford's round of layoffs, I found very few jobs available in the Detroit metropolitan area.

I finally gave up on Michigan and had to relocate for a job. The good news is that my salary is $30k more than what I made at Ford.

I check this board once a week to see what's happening at Ford. I'm not surprised they are doing layoffs again. How are they going to pay for all the recalls and make their stock price look better for investors?

Good luck to whomever this impacts. Michigan severely underpays their IT workforce. Look outside Michigan if possible for better opportunities.
