Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

I’m craft union worker from another company with the possibility to hire on UP.

Reading the posts here I assume I should probably just stay put where I’m at now at for now? It’s for the service tech positions btw.

If you are satisfied with your current job, then by all means stay there. If not, then what can It hurt? It s—s like most jobs, but overall has been good to me for 25 years. You will be furloughed, fired, starved out, etc.at some point. Keep your “ducks in a row” and some savings for a rainy day and you will be fine. Absolutely do not come here if you live from paycheck to paycheck!

We will welcome you with open arms . We will groom you pet you. Tell you how good of a person you are and you do good work. Then we will talk behind your back and make rude comments and lastly fire you.

I think the Renzinberger drivers get paid more than the managers when you figure hours worked.

@1cwz If you considered the unions "do nothing" then going into management is far from an escape because now you are babysitting those people and getting blamed for their stupidity. Even if you pull someone out of service they'll more than likely be back in service within a week.

They even got rid of the manager's pension recently, so all new managers get is railroad retirement and a 401k which is basically the same as an agreement employee. Not to mention with the hours you'll work as an MTO, you're basically making around $20 an hour. Get a lower paying job elsewhere (we'll say $70K a year) on a 40 hour work week and that's $33 an hour.

Yeah I know back in the day people were getting huge bonuses etc., but those days are over. The people that had it good back in the day are now up at the top making it miserable for everyone else basically telling everyone do as I say not as I did.

I hired out as a trainman a few years back, got tired of the do nothing unions and went into management. That was the best move I ever made. Railroad retirement and the 401k is so much better than a social security check.

@OP: If you've read the posts on this forum and you still decide to go and work at UP, then you deserve whatever they give to you. Don't say that you weren't warned.

As per glassdoor.com:

Employees who would recommend UP to a friend: 16%
Employees who approve of CEO: 9%

9%

That's not a typo. UP was also rated the worst place to work in the United States in 2019 based on data from glassdoor.com, beating out McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Subway, and every other place people think of when they think of a miserable place to work.

Unless they are paying you more then your current job and guaranteeing in writing (that’s not going to happen) that you’re not going to be laid off stay where you are this company is not reliable at this time yes long term if you happen to find a position that can’t be outsourced, contracted, or just plain gotten rid of you “might” be safe but even then I wouldn’t hold my breath. best advise from someone whose been involved with the company for 12 years and had family and friends with them as well that retired out don’t come to this company unless your absolutely certain you want to give up your life to a company that only wants you to work for them and not have a life ever

I’m not sure where you would even apply unless it’s Tucson for a minimum wage do it all locomotive job. Everywhere else has a mountain of people furloughed and they want to lay off more. I’m looking elsewhere for work and don’t understand how anyone would consider Union Pacific these days. It’s a cut throat operation.

What department has a service tech?
I’m usually not too vocal about the company but I wouldn’t if I were you. It’s just not a good place currently.

Um yeah unless you want to be in constant fear of being fired or furloughed. This place is a meat grinder but good luck.
