Salaries Paid Time Off

This email was sent to all salaried leaders yesterday. Talk about adding insult to injury.

SEA Leaders,

Effective January 1, 2020, we have transitioned our salaried workforce from a traditional time-off model that designated the type of time (vacation, sick and hourly) to a flexible paid time off (“Flexible PTO”) plan. The Flexible PTO plan allows salaried Ambassadors to take time off as needed without limiting the amount of Flexible PTO that can be taken, provided requests for time off are made in advance with timely management approval and fall within the policy guidelines.  This policy is based on mutual trust between employer and employee. It gives Ambassadors opportunities to work or take time off as they see fit, as long as they continue to fulfill their job duties while maintaining their employment consistent with company policy.
The new policy is attached and will be posted on the SEA Intranet for you to refer to throughout the year.

Managers, please take time to review the policy this week and discuss it with your salaried team at the next available opportunity to ensure there is aligned understanding of the policy and the benefits it provides.  If you have any questions, please reach out to your local HR leader for additional perspective.

Stop with this union sh–.

Unions work best for skilled jobs. If it’s that bad, do what most others have done and leave. Look at how many managers, GMs, corporate VPs and even CEOs have left. If you don’t work in Zoo or as a performer, a union isn’t going to do jack for you.

A union needs to be established. They would no longer be able to pull this sh–. They are screwing the people who have dedicated their lives to this company. Minimal raises, Cap outs, no cost of living and now what they have done with sick time and vacation is just wrong.

It’s our own fault. We take the abuse lying down. We need to come to the realization that it’s every fish for themselves in this contaminated ocean. It doesn’t have to be that way. When the opportunity comes, and come it shall, will we organize? Will we unite? It’s time to put up or shut up about the abuse.

SeaWorld changed the policy a few years ago that you get no payments for unused vacation when you leave. That changed in 2017 when Joel was still there. They still might have to do it in California because they have different HR laws there. Florida is a no go for sure. If you don't use it and you quit or are laid off, you get nothing. Laid off you get severance based on your years of service and level in the organization.

You are correct, this is all about cost containment and getting the most work out of far less staff. Salaried get a really sweet deal. Hourly....well...sorry about our luck. Thanks Hill Path!

I don't think the decision is so one sided as frustrated whale seems to think. This would not have been put into place unless it was calculated to be a cost cutting measure. Mileage may vary depending on your leader, but there are many folks who don't take all of their allotted vacation days, and some people who may hardly use any at all. Seaworld will no longer have to pay out those vacation hours whenever those employees leave.

"This policy is based on mutual trust between employer and employee."

This part sickens me. You can trust that salaried people who often are as lazy as anyone can take time off whenever they want but if I had to take time off right now for being sick I have -zero- time off to take because I have no more sick time and have not yet worked enough to even take off one day.

I often question how much work a lot of salaried people have when often times they have plenty of time to just grab a broom and dustpan and walk around the park. Granted not every salaried person will fall under this, I know many personally that are as swamped as us hourly folks. Some departments will get more of a squeeze as they have to continue to do more work under less people while their "leaders" get more time off.
