Verizon Puts 5G Wireless Home Broadband Expansion on Hold Until Late 2020

Verizon will hold off on expanding its millimeter wave 5G wireless home broadband service until at least the second half of 2020, citing equipment availability issues.

Ronan Dunne, executive vice president and group CEO of Verizon’s Consumer Division, told attendees at a Citi investor’s conference that Verizon’s initial introduction of Home 5G was just a market test, and until newer high-powered wireless routers arrive that will be capable of more robust reception of the very high frequencies the service works on, Verizon will not expand the service further.

Dunne called the next generation of 5G home receivers “key” to Verizon’s wireless home broadband strategy. Dunne said the new equipment will let consumers receive more distant and weaker 5G wireless signals, allowing Verizon to expand coverage of the service to more households. The current generation of 5G receivers were designed for use in smartphones, which hampers in-home reception quality.

Verizon initially promised to serve about one-quarter of the United States with its wireless home broadband service, eventually capable of supplying 500/200 Mbps and more to subscribers. But Verizon’s goal to reach over 30 million households will take the company as long as seven years to reach.

Dunne also warned Verizon is prioritizing 5G coverage in urban commercial areas instead of suburban, rural, and residential neighborhoods. Verizon’s core 5G network will target dense urban areas, including commercial shopping, business, and entertainment venues like concert halls and sports stadiums where the company measures the highest traffic demand it hopes to satisfy with 5G. Verizon’s home 5G broadband service piggybacks on Verizon’s 5G mobile network, which means it will only be available in neighborhoods where Verizon has deployed its network of small cells.

4cow, OMG, you gotta be kidding me that the 5g announcement had impact with the stock.

Last week was ex-dividend date. Do you have any idea what that is?

Yes
I want to pay hundreds of dollars to go to a concert, and then watch a movie while I’m there, or browse the web at super duper non existent 5G speed!
Think artists are going to be cool with 20,000 people streaming their live show for free? Think again.

Funny how the stock prices dropped about 2 days before this news hit.
Inside trade much?
So you go to your investors and promise the moon, and then admit that except for rockets capable of getting there, it’s a great plan!
Also funny how I still get stopped at least once a week by someone asking if they’ll ever get Fios in their area, not once have I been asked about 5G.
No one cares about it, it’s not really something anyone wants, definitely something no one needs.
But Fios? People love it and want it.
What a clever leadership to abandon the one and only product they have which there is a demand for to instead promote a product that there is no demand for and as of yet simply doesn’t work all that well.
They claim 30 cities, but we all know better. Been here before right?

It might of worked had they not got rid of cough cough the people building it. They ran off all the talent. Targeting Americans treating them worse the poorly. Unethical shady etc

What is FiOS? No one knows what that is here in California.

5G home broadband works only if it is priced around $50 for unlimited data and it is as stable as a FiOS wired connection! This will fail mightily if data is limited OR the price is beyond $50 OR the connectivity is shaky! Verizon, get all the three right before you enter into the market! Half-assed product in the name of beating the competition would only result in another oath:, a Verizon company!
I have FiOS internet and don't need 5G home broadband. Verizon's ubiquitous 4G LTE is more than sufficient for my needs! They are now pricing wireless data fairly because of the thumping John Legere gave them! Not long ago, VZ executives used to dismiss him as "the guy in a pink shirt"!

Even if wireline was profitable, the unions are incentive enough to dump it. Best to get rid of it as soon as you can find someone gullible enough.

Unfortunately, it is DW and will be with FL,TX & CA in the near future. Look at the real numbers before you post.

@1bhf: Are you saying wireline doesn’t turn a profit? Deadweight? LOL
Do some research. Wireline accounts for 25-30% of VZ profit.

Selling it off is the quickest way to get rid of the deadweight. The sooner we find a s—er, the better. Let that anchor drag a different company to the bottom.

Batman, I am glad you are not ignorant as others on this blog. If you ask me, wireline will be sold very soon because of the lack of margins they generate vs wireless.

“Wireless means no wires”

You do realize that every cell needs a fiber feed, and a power feed, don’t you?
Guess not. Which suggest you are one of those people who believe in FM transmission. F—ing Magic, huh?

And what a scam it is!

Typical Verizon BS.

Why not just start advertising teleportation machines, since the technology to do that doesn’t exist yet either?

5G is a lemon, techs saw it first, and finally the company admits it.
So what now , Batman?

Mwg... You are totally right. I'd like to point out that wireline can be substituted with union, and wireless with union free.

Wires will be replaced by wireless technology. No need for wires, it's just a matter of time and this will benefit us.

Awesome selling point:
Take an already high EMF and make it much more powerful, inside your home, no less.

Not in my house, anyway.

PS - there isn’t a shortage of equipment, but rather a shortage of equipment that works the way they dream it will. The solution of boosting power is fine, in a lab. In the real world not a good selling point.
And certainly there is no demand for 5G, not many people care about it with the exception of the companies trying to make it. But it’s a big market yawn- even if it worked as advertised, which it has yet to do.
What is your need for it?
That’s pesky reality interfering with poorly planned dreams.
