Thread regarding IBM layoffs

2020s are the decade of commercial quantum computing, says IBM

  1. I.P. Watson, blockchain, CAMSS, etc. Long live Quantum!

Can we get some odds on if IBM will screw the pooch on dominating in this space if they do happen to be first to market?

This is just the latest smoke and mirrors marketing hype designed to give investors a quantum of solace.

Just more marketing bluster with the goal to try and keep IBM relevant. Move on ...

Despite what IBM, Google, and other companies are saying to the press, there is no such thing as an error-corrected, general purpose, "quantum computer" in existence yet. Let alone a commercial one. There are very interesting science experiments masquerading as "quantum computers". The hype vs reality ratio for QC is 1000X what it was for AI, and it was off the charts with AI.

IBM Research is mostly dead. About 10 years ago, the edict was still "research to look ahead 10-20 years" - i.e. skate to where the puck will be. Since 10 years ago, the edict is increasingly "no research that is not directly applicable to current products" - i.e. skate to where the puck has been.

Research is now development, and researchers are generally not good developers. The research staff are not happy about this and are constantly jumping ship. Stupid IBM. I guess they just want to keep the department open so they can claim they still do research.

Quantum has always been an exciting field just out of reach due to physics. It appears that IBM, Google, etc etc have started to crack the physics issues, but it will still depend on knowledgeable researchers (most likely less than 100 worldwide who have the experience necessary), and VERY deep pockets. Has IBM kept those researchers around, or did they “age” them out To save their way to prosperity, and Google hired them. Either way, the other big issue is budget and IBM’s pocketbook is drying up research wise, where as Googles is expanding. IF IBM has some advantage due to longer term investment, it would not surprise me to see IBM IP license that out to all comers
