BE is nothing to do with your performance....in many cases. Its to do with managing people out the door without giving them a pay out. Wake up to reality!

Looks like they are replacing the pmp system at the end of the year. Anyone has any idea how it works? No doubt against the employees

Fed up with the bs,

Of course you can get a BE, even with completing all of your goals. If your manager had to constantly step in and help to the point of doing your work... or he had to constantly remind you of tasks... or the work was just not done well... You can easily be BE. There are still some true BE's here. Just not 10% on every team.

if everyone who gets a BE doesn't sign off the PMP you could create a situation where management is getting forced to rethink this forced ranking system. As long as you participate and only feel bad for yourself you will not change anything. Management has no morals and code of conduct is not applied. The only one who can change it is yourself. If all BE's would not sign off it would create a heavy hit for the system of lies.

Yes, they can suddenly rate you BE.
And you cant dispute the rating.
What... take on BNY in a law case.. are you nuts?
Its all ring fenced, they will just say you underperformed, relative to your peers.
Thats what I was told last time.
Since then, Ive gotten cash together, and Im ready for exit plans.

Surely an employee who has received all year round good reviews cannot suddenly be told they are BE? Year end PMP should not hold any surprises. In this case it appears there was no discussion or indications that the employee was at risk of being in the 10% BE. This alone could be grounds for a legal case??

Netflix does this stacked ranking BS. They are a “cool” tech company and since BNY is a tech company now, it means they have to do this I guess.

I was a manager. I had to give a forced BE to an excellent employee just once. I spent the rest of the year telling them it was differentiation, not performance, and certainly not their fault. I’ll never do that again, because I just quit. It might not help my teams, but I feel better already. Good luck to us all!

Interesting... forced rankings began in 2001 under in the Mellon entity. Did not realize that it was so recent for EMEA and BONY. Welcome aboard all... this does explains quite a bit of the differing angst across regions regarding this admittedly bizarre approach towards Human Resources. After 19 years one does come to realize that it is honestly all just c-ap.

Do people really have their ratings already? We haven't even scheduled our discussions yet.

Massachusetts, is not alone. All U.S. employees of BNYM are employees at will. BNY Mellon CAN and does let you go at any time and they do not actually have to give you a package.

The exception is for people who are hired with a formal employment contract which defines exit benefits. If that is you, then you already know it and your lawyer certainly reviewed it with you.

For the rest of us the WARN act applies but is easy to circumvent in spirit while remaining legal in detail. Really it’s simply that you’re working at a really bad place.

The WARN act does not apply because BNYM management deliberately stays below the thresholds requiring advanced notice, unlike most every other public company. The SUB pay has nothing to do with this practice. It’s just another example of a company “policy” that disregards employees by staying just below the # per site of employees being let go that would otherwise require 60 days notice. It’s all very calculated.

Per WARN: A covered employer must give notice if there is to be a mass layoff which does not result from a plant closing, but which will result in an employment loss at the employment site during any 30-day period for 500 or more employees, or for 50- 499 employees if they make up at least 33% of the employer's active workforce. Again, this does not count employees who have worked less than 6 months in the last 12 months or employees who work an average of less than 20 hours a week for that employer.

Hope this information helps.

It breaks my heart to read this. I left BNYM on my own and never looked back. Once the forced ranking system came out, I knew it was the beginning of the end. I saw so many co-workers unfairly labeled with the scarlet letter of BE and it truly affected their confidence. How could it not? Then it was the "every man for himself" mentality that destroyed multiple departments with all with all of the backstabbing and people turning on each other in order to try to save themselves. There are plenty of great companies where I live and I'm now working for a great company that treats its employees very well and has no such forced ranking system. Nor are our jobs going to India. BNYM has a horrible reputation in my area. Two of the companies I interviewed with actually asked me if all the stories about BNYM were true because they heard so many horror stories from other BNYM employees who interviewed with them. There are much better opportunities out there for all of you. just need to chin up, be confident, and take your transferable skills with you to the next place. My mental health has improved tenfold ever since I got out from under the Dark Cloud that is BNYM.

OP, first off -I'm sorry they are doing this to you. Second, head up and eyes forward soldier. You sound like an excellent employee and in short order I'm sure you are going to find yourself in a better situation. Dont give them the power to ruin your holidays with their nonsense.

It’s not you, it’s BNY Mellon. You probably make more than your co workers. It’s all about the money. I received a BE also for the first time in 15 yrs. All expectations not just met but exceeded this year. Mgr said it’s not me it’s BNY. This place is a hell hole. I’m waiting till they walk me to the door as I want whatever package they give, then moving on happily.

Just remember, There are a lot of great companies out there that would love to have you work for them! BNY is a dying company that will move everything it can overseas for cheap labor! So we will all be better off when we leave!

Update your resume and send it out! Take stock of all your knowledge and experience. Go on interviews and Sell, Sell Sell yourself! and you will land in a much better place!

Good luck!

I’m very sorry to hear that - if this is any consolation, when I get in these states of mind I try and remind myself:

  1. It’s not the end of the world
  2. I will not die because of this
  3. There will be better days ahead to look forward to.

An employer CAN NOT just fire you, there are Federal laws that require a large employer who is terminating a large % of their workforce to provide 60 days notice and some states make it 90. It's called the WARN ACT.

The financial compensation is to make up for not providing that notice.

That's the difference between fired for cause and laid off without adequate warning.

All, performance reviews mean absolutely nothing. In Massachusetts, for example, we are all employees at will. BNY Mellon can let you go at any time and they do not have to give you a package. I think it is the same in every state in the U.S. That is the law. There is nothing you can do other than to get a new job. HR, like all HR Departments, work for the company, not you. They are not the “Union Representative.” The only downside here is the timing of the lay-off.

I just don’t get the reasoning for the BE insult. Everybody knows that we are cutting staff, but why insult people and destroy their emotional well being in the process? Simply let people go with dignity. Whacko Chuckie added a pointlessly mean edge to it and unfortunately Sr Management has referred to it as a “sense of energy we haven’t had for a long time” and won’t be changing it.

Empty chair is what they want. They want people to walk without a payout. Turn up, take your wage and go home. Do not let it impact your mental health. The company is shameful.

It happened to me last year.
I was depressed for months after.
I told my manager, its affecting my mental health.
I ended up blaming myself, and doubting my abilities.
When I tried to disagree, it spiralled into an argument.
If it happens again, thats an empty chair. Told him bluntly.

It's not about you - it's corporate bs. They target the people who are costing them too much money, give them a phony BE rating, and hope they'll leave voluntarily. If you've been at BNY long enough to get a nice paid vacation if they lay you off, then stick around a while and see what happens.

The job market is good right now. I'm sticking around (if they keep me) for 2020, but I may get out after that. I'm just trying to learn all I can so that I can get myself a new job and a nice raise.

It was all started when we all (including managers on all levels) became resources and stopped to be professionals, I have first heard it from Robert Kelly many years ago....

The organisation is pushing people far far beyond what is acceptable. Its only a matter of time until someone breaks resulting in a tragedy. Time to reach put to regulators or for a mass strike. This is a time bomb. This company appears to have no code of conduct or moral codes.

I was laid off and had 4 competing offer within a month or so, finally took the one with the company which is 5 times bigger than BNY and package was 23k more than I used to make at BNY. It’s time to celebrate, everything happens for a reason, so don’t worry and be happy. They are the looser not you. Trust me, you will soon feel blessed. Life is too short to be sad.
