A number of IBM middle executives (2nd line BUEs and directors) left IBM for Amazon in December. Many were involved in IBM's "mainframe is a cloud" strategy that seems to be failing.
Yes, its a long time in coming. While Ginni Rometty is flapping her lips on IBMs success in the cloud, her leaders are opening asking how they can use Amazon's cloud model to also be successful. I was in that meeting while senior architects proposed this approach and cloud managers like Robin.W and Lesli.L sat silent only later to ask; How can we do this? Way to go!
IBM last true success was under Thomas Watson Sr and Jr – CEOs of today continue to ride that train.
