Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Engineered BE ratings

The company are engineering good employees in to the BE 10% quota. Statistically aprox. 75% of employees that receive BE have departed the bank. DO NOT LEAVE. Instead go down the HR grievance route and refuse to sign off your BE rating. They will change it back to Achieved and have to pay your bonus and payrise.

This unfortunately is true. Managers are often told to pick a specific number of their DR’s that initially marked achieved and move them to BE in order to meet the quota. This makes the ratings completely meaningless. Disgusting practice.

I didn’t sign off on BE evaluation, instead I put a comment that for 20+ years of service I was evaluated only as either ME or EE, in half a year I was escorted out of the building , so sign off means nothing to them...

Simply do not sign off on it.

They accomplish three things with the forced rating: 1) get people to quit and not have to pay SUB, 2) don’t pay bonuses, and 3) don’t give merit increase. What they failed to realize is that it affects not only the unfairly rated employee, it affects the majority of the employee population because it reinforces how little employees are valued and how dirty the company operates.

I always comment that I do not believe I should be rated as BE as I am competing all my functions on a daily basis with minimal supervision, and I am always willing to help the group in any way. They will always add some unrealistic goal that nobody will meet, and if you do then your their happy as your doing 2 jobs. It's not even from my immediate manager. At least I say my piece, you really can't win. In my case it's more about salary they wish they could shed for cheaper and younger labor. Now I just keep my head down and not volunteer anymore.

Speak to HR. Get everything in writing. Then go externally to a legal firm. This organisation is not somewhere that will attract strong people in the market. Sounds like a terrible place to work and just a bit dated too.....

If you are acknowledging it then you accept your weakness, you are validating the fake BE making them easy way to get ride of you at any moment and k–ling all the strong evidence if you ever want to fight back or take legal action in future.
If you get more than 1 BE, you get no bonus, no raise but you will be shown the door on your 3rd BE. Good luck!

What a BS! Signing the PMP for sure is not an obligation and it is not just a confirmation that your manager spoke to you, otherwise it would say this. You sign off that you agree with the rating.

It seems you are another manager who has no clue. Playing the tough guy that you could easily give more than 10% BEs. If this would be true then you should wonder, why you weren't able to address performance issues during the year and could motivate your team. The one who deserves the BE seems to be you.

Bonus depends on your direct management. They can decide if you get a bonus. Bonus is not linked to rating. HR will neither be active when you don't sign off nor will change your bonus.

Shocking behaviour in modern age. This company sounds awful. I will never work for such a place.

You need to write in a comments as many evidence of your faulty "BE" as you can fit to comments or as many you have. What I can suggest base on my experience keep all you conversation with manager documented (via e-mail or via skype conversation. Request manager to write all your assignments, don't do "favor" to manager without officially this work assign to you. Keep documented result of all work you did. So all this could be used as evidence of your later on.

Refusing to sign can get you fired for cause. Signing just indicates that your manager has spoken with you. It's like the people that refuse to sign a ticket and then get more charges. If you don't agree with it, put comments. HR won't do anything for you, and yes BE's still get bonus, and raise. FYI all of my BE's deserve it, and I could have had more than my 10%.

Wrong HR will not change your rating. And BEs do get bonuses.

Check out the Mysource page for pmp, there’s a nice pdf guide for managers available to all employees that gives specifics on how to rate and the percentages you need. I’m sure it will be down by the time anyone sees this. The language in there on how to judge another human being is deplorable.
