The original poster, being an apparent expert at what works where and what doesn’t, should have no problem finding a job at a modern development shop. So why all the whining and bitterness?

Unless the reality of the “economy is doing great” has already hit home. So sad.

Java has great capabilties on the back end. There is a TREMENDOUS amount of it in production right now in Xerox, as there is in . Messaging, integration, workflow, app servers, etc. Stable, scalable, great tooling and runtimes. Very different from the front end/UI where it really has no place, esp as a fat client.

Know the difference.

@kmb, Really? Where do they use Java on the desktop? You know, as in the topic of this thread?

If you don't like it, go work for

Airbnb.
Uber.
Netflix.
Spotify.
Instagram.
Google.
Pinterest.
Slack.
Apple.

And be sure to know Java, because that's what you'll be programming in.

@abr Well articulated and I agree completely but competitors managed not trash their most important products with Java.

"anybody that goes to management and says a working system with hundreds of thousands of lines of code should be replaced just to pick a new technology..."

This EXACT thing happened! Look at the production controller!

Somebody keeps bringing up java here, like it's a big part of our products or growth. It's a single technology used in some of our products. Obviously whoever keeps bringing this up is pretty clueless about technology and product development. You don't throw away a working system simply because there might be something newer and better out there. There is at least 20 years of development behind some of these products.

Development is done in an iterative manner, and anybody that goes to management and says a working system with hundreds of thousands of lines of code should be replaced just to pick a new technology should be fired. If there is a new technology that has something that allows us to provide value to customers, than by all means write up a justification.
