Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why do we come back?

To warn those that remain.

It was my turn to be sent packing after 14 years, that was a little more than two years ago now. The LR was very unexpected as I was singled out is a key leader in the team just a few weeks before. It hurt and it took several months to get over the shock actually, and then several more to fix my atrophied skills.

Once I did, I found a much better job - not in terms of pay (which it was at +40%), but in terms of respect. I'm no longer at a company the values my ability to s— up to my manager more than my ability to produce solid work.

So why do I come back? Because Cisco is a horrible place to work and I want to warn those that remain to get the eff out on your own terms. Get your skills up and get something it makes you excited to be alive.

I don't get back for people like the original poster of this thread - I have no doubt that Cisco is the best he can do. I come back for people like me who know deep down they're wasting their time here.

I left three times, came back each time for more money, higher position, all depends on how good you can BS your interview. On board in a day, go on vacation for 3 years, leave for more money, losers stay and pray for promotions.

If somehow there just sleep a lot and ignore everything its good for your health. Dont try to make a difference, dont hurt anybodys ego. get some exercise too so when you wake up you are fit.

I was LR'd at 18 year mark. I disagree that Cisco was a horrible place to work. It was a great place. It was also however like a warm blanket for a long nap. Do NOT get complacent. You may think you are super well positioned and a high-value employee - DO NOT count on it. Two quarters earlier from my LR, I received a big award. Two quarters later - OUT. I don't regret the time I spent at Cisco at all, but DO NOT underestimate that you can easily be OUT, just a few short months after even your best performance. I was amazed at the opportunities and awesome jobs out there. DO NOT get too comfortable - COMPLACENCY will cost you in the long run. If you do remain up to speed and relevant, everything will be ok. If you spend your time NOT pushing yourself, you will pay for it later. USE your time for YOUR advantage. PUSH YOURSELF ALWAYS.
