Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

When will 5G pop revenues/profits?

How long will it take for 5G to turn on significant rev/profit growth ? Will it look like bump from smartphones or something far less? Personally I have no need for 5G that I can think of - maybe fixed 5G if it could beat price/performance of my monopolistic ISP - but not 5GNR - I mean when I'm not moving I almost always have plenty of wifi bandwidth e.g. home, hotels, restaurants, airports, .. and when I'm moving - in a car, etc, I only need calling - rarely data.

Regarding FIOS maybe in hindsight Verizon should have taken the AT&T approach and then upgraded from there. Fiber to the curb vs the premises.

Hopefully soon because FiOS and wireline are big fat boat anchors dragging the whole place down.

it used to be that launching in a market meant 99% of people can use the service. these days they put up 1 cell site at a hot dog stand in madison square garden that covers 50 square feet and it means 5g is here in new york city !!!1

For some reason, Verizon totally abandoned fios and the managers lie about why. We have an area in south jersey that doesn’t have Comcast, the outside plant is in great disrepair, and the people don’t have good cell coverage...when they call 911, they get the state police in Delaware. The municipality sued Verizon and forced them to put fios there. I know for a fact that they had nearly a 100% take. When I asked the second line boss why they weren’t going to finish placing fios in the CO’s that had it, he said that everywhere they have put fios, they are only getting a 30% take rate. When I brought up the municipality that had a near 100% take, he said that was a lie, propaganda. I work with the techs in that garage and I asked them about the take rate...just to confirm what I already knew. All of the techs I asked agreed that it was almost 100%. So the second liner basically lied to my face to promote the company’s agenda. I guess some egghead way up the food chain decided that fios was to be abandoned. If they aren’t going to continue placing it, they should sell it to someone who will.

It's pretty foolish to not finish the FiOS build, while they're doing the 5g build. It's going to take years, if not decades, for 5g to be perfected, and people would jump on FiOS immediately. They should focus the 5g build outside the wireline footprint.

Recently watched a youtube video, created by a young man who tested 5g somewhere in the Northeast. Great on the street that had the antenna and lackluster 4g once you turned the corner.

To me, being in the market means saturation of an area and not specific streets with hit or miss service. All companies are still years away from consistent coverage.

Please go to the Verizon website, wireless section and select 5G Coverage Maps. Verizon can say they are in 30 markets by the end of the year, but coverage is quite literally on on a few streets here and a few corners there. No real coverage which is needed in order to monetize.

Or read Tom’s Guide, “What is 5G? The definitive guide to the 5G network rollout”.

Let’s just hope Verizon didn’t put all of their eggs in this 5G basket.

I have had 5g at home for years. They call it Comcast.

I am sure Verlieson will manufacture "a need" that forces everyone into 5g at some point.

Your points are right on the money, and it’s not clear how well this will do. Keep in mind also that many towns are not embracing the technology because of concerns over EMF’s.
No product on the market beats Fios, and still people are angry they were never given the chance to have it.
The desire to become all wireless has steered this ship onto rocks. Not sure how they plan to fix that.
