Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

What about facilities?

Does anyone think we need all these facility guys walking around drinking coffee? Especially, with stores closing. Wouldn’t it make sense that we lose some of these guys? Less stores to work on less facility colleagues?

I am in facilities and agree, there are guys that “walk around drinking coffee” I also say, don’t put us all in the same group. The bottom line is, there aren’t enough facilities people as it is because we put all of our focus on doing “projects” for the visual team and space. Let us do our actual jobs and stop pulling the plug on money at the end of every month. Outsourcing our jobs will only make things worse as far as productivity for the rest of the store. Do you think a vertical company is going to respond quicker than we will? Do you really think the company will save money by using those companies? Do you think when it’s hot in your stores that Trane or Carrier or one of those HVAC companies is going to get there quicker than we will? Those union companies will charge way more than what they pay us and will get there at their convenience. They could care less about the customers or our disrupted business. So again, get rid of the ones that are “walking around drinking coffee” and hire guys that want to work and that are qualified.

Anyone thinking that 100% outsourcing of facilities is as dumb as a box of rocks. Macy’s tried this once and it was a total financial failure. It would be better to properly staff facilities with qualified and competent staff and allow them to do their job. Are there some techs just coasting yes, and I say eliminate those that are not worth their salary and hire better techs. Then and only then will more get done in house and on time.

If they are foolish enough to try this again, put a fork in them. It wasn’t even two years before federated took us back, found out cost were high, heck a single light bulb doubled. Doubt fellow maintenance techs would be willing to stick around for this again . Go to c&w website and check out jobs, looks like they have trouble getting skilled positions filled. In general, all trades are in the same position. My fellow maintenance associates get offers from contractors to join there companies. It doesn’t matter hvac, plumbing, electrical, pipe-fitting, etc.., not one company we have contracted is properly staffed due lack of skilled labor. It isn’t 15 years ago, we are more marketable and in high demand. Maybe time to explore the possibilities.

This is a different animal than 15 years ago. We saved millions by out sourcing MST. The same will happen to facilities.

They WERE outsourced in our region many, many years ago. Lasted about 2 years, then Federated took it back over.

As a former ASTS I worked closely with the Facilities people. They have more work than they can handle. Always having to run between stores which can be a huge distance in a large metropolitan area. Making things work with limited resources available because money is not being put into stores. They have a very frustrating job.

My facilities team works for the whole district, but when they're at my store they're usually working hard if you give them a push. I've heard rumors that they're going to be outsourced too soon enough. Only difference is they're union so they undoubtedly will not go down without a fight

This can be outsourced to a company called C&W services. Probably will happen soon.

Have you seen some of these buildings? We need more, not less! Already takes months to get on the list for any type of repair.
