Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

Saint John gets 5 more years

Saint John Xerox centers getting 5 more years. Kick off confirmed our jobs were safe because of a lease renewal (Not that that REALLY means much... but). But still no pay raise. Any other call center in Saint John pays more and does better.

  1. L. retired last year when he found out everything was being moved offshore.

Everyone else should be looking for their own way out too, because this current executive team only cares about the expenses, and they are moving everything offshore as fast as they can.

They let a 2,200+ person building in Lewisville Texas sit almost empty for several years after they moved 90% of the jobs to Montego Bay Jamaica and Guatemala, so don't believe their song and dance about "5 more years" on the lease. The facility expenses are peanuts. The employees are the expensive part, which is why they are trying to offshore everything.

Xerox walked away from the lease in Halifax. In fact they spent thousands on a new sales office and closed it soon after long before the lease was to expire. Lease costs for Place 400 are peanuts and would simply be a tax write off anyway. Friends... don't be fooled. Get out there now and get new jobs and protect yourself from the lies. Xerox DOES NOT CARE about you, nor does HCL. They will not be there for 5 morr years! Its all about profit, not people!

Did they say the lease was for both buildings or just place 400?

They are going to move what they can but 5 year lease is hopeful for those who might have a difficult job to transfer. Keep in mind I'm sure the lease is set up that they can keep reducing square footage like they did in Halifax. Reduce the footage every year until it's gone.

You know things are bad when people miss Ray.

I'm just waiting around hoping we get severance. I don't trust dawn at all, I can't believe I actually miss Ray

There a clause in the saint john lease with a dollar amount that would be paid if they break the lease. 5 year lease means nothing.

Management will tell you whatever they think you want to hear to try and keep you working at 110%, right up until the day they call a meeting to tell you that your job is being moved.

I was with the Supplies group when they closed the Tampa Bay call center, and the management kept telling us we were in a "great position" and had "an excellent track record to protect us" and "we have been here for a long time, why would they close us now", right up until the week they announced it was being closed and moved to Lewisville Texas.

And then the Lewisville management did the same thing when they closed that location and moved it offshore to Montero Bay Jamaica.

If you haven’t actually seen the lease with your own eyes then STOP BELIEVING THE STORIES!
I wouldn’t trust one single person that was a leader in this company nor a single word they say.

I'm not sure signing a new lease makes much of a difference since the main cost is the resources. It would still be a lot cheaper to pay for a call center in Manilla and keep leasing the empty building in St John than it would be to keep the St John operation fully staffed and running.

The last thing i want to see is more jobs offshored but when every other call center in North America has moved offshore why would St John be an exception? Especially when there are so many existing ones to choose from (Guatemala, Manilla, Montego Bay)

XBS locations got shut down before their leases as well. Something about different taxes for a building in use vs not. Probably means some stability if their is no out in the contract but have seen other weird things to be sure.

Halifax did not have time left on the lease. When it came time to renew they chose not to and provided employees 1 year to prepare for work from home while the current lease expired.

Its positive news for Saint John to get a lease for that many years, especially with 2 centers.

Lease renewal doesn't mean anything unless you have access to the actual leasing contract. There could be a small early termination clause that lets them out after 12 months. With the economy being what it is in St John I can't imagine there are many other takers for the building, so Xerox may have the upper hand in any contract negotiations.

Like you said I wouldn’t put much into the lease renewal. I believe the Halifax Centre still had time left on their, lease look at it now.
