Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

MTech is doomed and everyone knows it

As someone previously clipped by a MT annual layoff process just wanted to offer hope to those that remain. Firstly, if you are affected, understand it is no reflection on your abilities - merely a byproduct of horrific leadership. As evidenced by the leadership that remains, most notably the inarticulate and impersonal CTO, Macy's is struggling and unable to attract the leadership talent necessary to succeed. Declining revenue, recurring store closings, layoffs & expense reductions - rinse and repeat annually. None of this is your fault. Take your severance, smile and wish them well - you will be fine. You are exiting into a great job market, you will quickly find work and it is highly unlikely it will be with a company doing worse than macy's. Many/most companies have leaders you can respect, that have a strategy that inspire and are able to interact with other humans in a respectful way. What may seem like a daunting situation is actually a gift, I am living proof, I love my new job! Great memories and I do miss many people and the great environment macys once had but those days are long gone and you will be much happier when you are as well. Best of luck!

I couldn't agree more. When I worked there, I used to refer to John's Creek leadership machine as, "that's the tragic of Macy's"... Since I left, all of my former team-mates have also left, some on their own and some through annual lay-offs. Each of us seems to be in a much healthier working environment. All that talent and knowledge jettisoned just to improve the bottom line. As a whole, M has never learned that losing folks with such strong business knowledge just lowers the quality and breadth of tech deliverables.

The only layoff I didn't roll my eyes at was the shutting down of John's Creek HR. I'm certain that the associate relations managers' performance appraisals must have been centered on the number of employees written up, or fired for trying to bring light to less than stellar examples of "integrity always." Truly some of the most two-faced individuals I've ever worked with.

"for the amount of time you're given to twiddle your thumbs, be in the office for 20 hrs/week (10am-4pm Mon-Thur), pretend to work while take advantage of contractors and BS your way through all meetings, most people at MacysTech are severely overpaid."
Special privileges for top officials' family members also working that take maximum advantage of hardly being in the office, yet milking the organization with fat paychecks they hardly deserve a penny. Managers pretend to not see or state anything, fearing their own jobs. If they clean up this one act, have employees work their behinds off the full 40 hours efficiently, all will straighten out well for the organization. What's with "unlimited sick" leave? Get that out as well. Height of misuse.. wake up in the morning, say you have a cold and take the day off and yet get paid for the whole day. No work, just sleep at home and collect a fat paycheck end of the week! No wonder the company is sinking so fast..

Mtech has the most incompetent managers and directors who support and promote wrong and incompetent people, who behave as if they own and run the company. Mtech is doomed by it’s very own people. Y’ll deserve better workplace free of politics. Stop crying over mtech and get your s**t together and get a new job.

If this is about engineers or product then it’s wrong. Industry pays way more than MCOM. Base is better benefits are better and most out there get RSU. Person posted this might not have skills and is the 11-4 kinda employee. Some could take a smaller job and make more.

MT pays at Market Average, I was part of this analysis multiple years. Keep in mind I am talking about base salary & bonus. I think everyone knows that benefits are very weak relative to other non-retail technology jobs. This is not an opinion, it is based on Market analysis by job title/role and led to the more recent job re-titling and pay grade ranges & bands. I can assure you Macy's is not paying above market rate. You may not find a comparable position, but if you do I'd expect you are as likely to make more as you are to make less, benefits should be better - namely medical coverage costs & 401k match.

There are likely some Mtech workers that were underpaid but I guarantee the majority are not..Its relative to location and actual job duties. The point was know what the market rate is for your position and don’t necessarily use your current pay as the measuring stick.

I agree that 35 percent pay cut for any Macy's Tech associate is what market will be willing to pay. For VP or Directors the reasonable pay cut is 45 percent ...

"Also understand though you are more than likely being overpaid at Macy’s.. A lot of former employees are realizing that so don’t let a 10-20% drop come as a total shock."

Nope, I was underpaid, and that's a common complaint at Macy's Technology in comparison to other Silicon Valley jobs tech jobs. I'm now happy to be at a job with competitive pay for the area.
