Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Question...

How long do they keep contractors at ANY Mellon? I been working as a contractor for 9 months. I heard that they don't extend contracts beyond one year.

Well, I met with my manager and I was told my contract is not being renewed. I was also told Right now there is no budget to hire me on full time though they would like to do so. So I do believe that there is some truth to this. At least at my location. I also know of other temps who were told there is a hiring freeze at my location. Might be different in other areas. Either way at least now I know.

There has not been ANY Mellon for 12 years so no contractors need to worry.

should be for no more than 2 years. After that they are supposed to decide to either hire direct or to let go. But we all know it doesnt always work like that.

There is no policy to cutback contractors. Not sure where you’re getting your info from. Contractors are able to be taken on a lot faster than filling open positions which is why they are used so much and their headcount doesn’t take from open available reqs. The need to keep you on does depend on the work you’re hired to do and you absolutely can apply for any open reqs within the bank. Not just the department you are currently working in

Depends on your department. I’m a contractor that started last April and I have been extended three times until December 31st this year. Same end date as the other contractors on my team. We have the same amount of contractors as FTEs with a few openings for additional FTEs. Us contractors were told if we wanted to convert to a FTE role we have to apply via the career website as a HR formality.

Well my contract ends in a few months, and my manager has not mentioned anything about extending it. So this might explain why. Thank you so much for th response at least I can prepare myself.

It depends on skills and department budget/policies. We had one contractor for almost ten years, and he only left because of a new opportunity. The latest policy is to cut back on contractors as much as possible and keep the skills in-house, and most of our contractors were not renewed when their contracts ran out in December.
