Getting ready for another layoff. Seems to be all US based. Heard as much as 10 percent. My area was higher. Cloud is heavily impacted.

GBS seems to be getting hit much harder than GTS
but....but...but the cloud and the recent red acquisition was going to save us all!!! Maybe spending 35bn for nothing wasn't a good move.
@1ojy - can’t, they laid him off
Question for the Watson AI:
What is the lowest % of personnel from the US so that the company still keeps the US look and feel?
If there is a team of 20 people in India/China/Mexico etc, led by 1-2 people in the US, the US folks are still the most visible and make the most of the decisions (and probably also most of the work...).
But if the amount of US workers becomes "homeopathic", will it still work? What if there is suddenly no US "face" to represent those non-US teams?
Lets put smart to work
"IBM is changing course and transitioning from Services to cloud."
Sure. If you consider selling a customer a LinuxOne box or selling them an OpenShift license or having GTS install VMWare on a client's server or having GBS conduct an App Modernization Strategy study that includes a slide at the end of the Powerpoint that says "you should consider moving stuff to the cloud" then yes, IBM is "transitioning to cloud". This is all just a repeat of a few years ago when they slapped Watson labels on 30 year old legacy tech and called it "Cognitive" for financial reporting purposes, they just printed up new labels that say "Cloud" instead.
I completely agree with you that IBM is restructuring to make the financial numbers. Please note IBM has gone all in on Redhat and the fortune 1200 crowd (think Z). Everything else doesn’t matter. IBM has determined they can make just as much profit out of Storage, Power, Legacy services via an IP deal. Like it or not, that’s the play that has been called. The final question is can IBM find a Willing buyer.
IBM is not restructuring to return to growth and be a Cloud leader... IBM is restructuring because it needs to make sure it will make earnings the next 4 quarters. It is only a money game.
Wake up people!!
Folks keep asking “will this impact GBS, or GTS, or Watson Health, etc etc. This is a complete corporate restructuring. IBM is changing course and transitioning from Services to cloud. They are not going to pick on one entity at the expense of the other. It’s across the board. I would expect the restructuring to replicate the revenue numbers of each division. GTS will take more cuts due to them representing more of the headcount and revenue to IBM. How do you change a corporate culture. You have to change the management team IBM is about to do that. It will hit all divisions. NOTE it has to be big enough to move the needle in wall streets eyes. There is a reason IBM froze all hiring and transfers. They are about to ask the fundamental question. “Do we need you” If no, you know the result. If yes, you will land on your feet and move forward. Welcome to the cloud era. IBM has finally decided to transform in a big way and muster out all of the folks who can’t transform.
As I read these reports. I can only imagine the incredible stress current IBMers are enduring while the company continues to implode. I left after 25 years as a programmer in 1992 when ranking and layoffs began. I thought the anxiety levels were high then, but I'm sure nothing compared to now. Good luck!
UK look to be getting culled again.
iBM is using the PiP tactic to get rid of employees. GBS impacted as of yesterday
Any word on GBS, or is this primarily a GTS focused initiative?
Because "cloud" is not a single job. Under "cloud" you have sales, marketing, development, consulting, services, etc. etc. Cutting half of "cloud" might mean cutting all the sales and marketing people but keeping development and consulting, for instance.
I think of it this way - IBM is doing for us what we know we should have done for ourselves anyway: Leave this place. We all know IBM is crumbling. There hasn't been a good future here for years. In my org, the really good people left on their own years ago and IBM has since been randomly laying off the rest year by year. It's been a sinking ship for awhile now.
We’ll know the answers by end of week.
Heard that 43% of GTS is getting hit and its global.
Not only US, also Europe is hit.
I've heard up to 35%. Lots of Cloud within GTS and GTS will be hit hard.
GLTA
Thanks for heads off but how could be cloud heavily impacted if that is the future technology ?
