Do not be afraid. I was LR'd now going on three years ago after eighteen years. It was tough at first but now can honestly say I am very thankful for the journey. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to work several inside and outside of Cisco consulting and regular full-time IT jobs. I'm making almost now double what I was making at Cisco. I have met great people and it has been a journey. It's been a ton of work. The biggest thing I can tell you is keep your skills sharp. Do not get lulled into a false sense of complacency at Cisco. That was my mistake, if you can call it a mistake. Push yourself, push yourself, push yourself. Always push yourself. Recently I have had the opportunity to be asked to come back. The company has changed so much, I don't think that will happen. I miss Cisco, but don't miss the new world of the LR cycle. Peace be with you. The biggest issue is Cisco is not doing annual reviews. Without formal reviews; you have no idea if it's truly worth putting in your absolute personal best. Without annual reviews, I don't really blame people for being complacent.

These stories remind me of my uncle ranting about Vietnam. Has Cisco become Silicon Valley's Vietnam?

Market also depends on your age. i.e. 50+ years of age is tough.
What state city are you in, not sure the market is so good in all locations.
