Thread regarding IBM layoffs

A Total Comp Question – Engineer Position / IBM Research (10+ years of experience)

There is a possibility that I might go for it – wanted to see if you can help me find out what the total compensation would be. Anyhow, this is for a postion with IBM Research located in Yorktown Heights. I have about 10 years of relevant experience… About four years of a very similar role experience.

OP: I hope you are basing your search on current, not past, truths about IBM. IBM Research is a shadow of its former self. Research is no longer 5-to-20-years out stuff that generates big breakthroughs later on. Pure research at IBM is mostly dead. Most of the research projects are simply chasing the competition - trying to re-engineer what other companies have already done. Research that is not tied to a product roadmap or sales is dead. This has been the new policy for a few years, so the present has now caught up with what used to be the future, and IBM has nothing more advanced than the competition. Research engineering at IBM is mostly interacting with outsourced teams and having to deal with the mess and delays they create, managed via endless conference calls, slack distractions, scrums and agile dog-and-pony shows. Everyone is p-ss-d off and scared all the time. You can do much much better elsewhere.

@1gqw+13N8uXp6 and you as a .....? are perfectly in tune with people's feelings and emotions? Clearly not seeing as how you've generalized all researchers and engineers as being on the spectrum. If you've been on this page at all over the past 5 years then you'll have noticed the trend that every year there are big layoffs even in seemingly positive trending groups, and if you're not a manager or exec you're at risk.

To the OP, the fact that you'll get a lot of opinion from this board would be a red flag to taking a job here, but if it's in r&d and this is one of the few spots that has positions for you, then fair. I'd say given IBM's nature in the rest of the company you'll be under-compensated based on the market, if it's a tight market maybe you have some more sway. IBM, for some reason, looks great on resume's so I'm sure you could work here for 2 years and go cash in elsewhere.

This is for layoff related posts
Please be respectful of this.

I realize it is difficult for research and engineering folks to he cognizant of other’s feelings and perspectives.

Ask yourself this question -
Should I post about a job offer received from IBM on a site where IBMers are looking for info about getting laid off and wondering how they will pay their mortgage, etc. if they are out of work for more than a month or two?

I am the OP, I'd happily do Glassdoor if they allowed dicussions there.

The salary data they post do not help me with my question (no geo or position info)...

Anyhow, does someone knows how stable IBM Research is and especially when it comes to micro and nanoelectrinics?

You'll get a wide range of opinions on this board, keep in mind that research is subsidized and it's inherently a cost center only - so, I would not worry about layoffs that much as they tend to be more protected than others.

From a total comp perspective, I have no solid numbers for you but I'd venture to say that this feels like a $200K package for me (based on your YEO)
