Unemployment

For those of you who already experienced RIF, were you able to apply for unemployment based on severance being a lump sum? Did you have to wait until you received the severance check to apply or could you do it right away since you were off payroll? Thank you!

Unemployment varies by state. Some states let you file and receive unemployment right away, after your last official day of employment or after your severance runs out. You'll need to check with your state unemployment office about the specific requirements and filing times where you live.

Most states have an employment payment estimator on the their site so you can have an idea of how much you can collect each week. You don't get as much as you think you do but it's better than nothing.

I applied as soon as I was notified to open the claim but could not submit actual weekly claim requests and did not receive any unemployment benefits until severence and PTO payout were exhausted

Unemployment varies by state. I’m in Texas and I did receive a lump sum severance. I fIled for employment the day I was let go. I started receiving unemployment right away. Your first week is what they call a waiting week but you will get that week once your unemployment ends or you get a job. I would advise to check your state unemployment website to see what their rules are or call their 800 number.

If you get severance, you cannot apply until the last week of that is gone. Then you can apply. Your first week of unemployment is your waiting week and you don't get paid for that. the next week you start getting paid. BUT, unemployment start date is the first day of the work week after the last day of your physical date of work or you last day of severance pay. It does not go by the last day of work if you get severance. Re-employment is offering training (that you can apply for) if you are what they call a dislocated employee. That means your job went overseas. They can offer you training to update your certifications, etc.. and they will help you find another job. You have to go into an office and register with them. You may be able to get food stamps also. They do offer some reprieve. On the good news side, there are a lot of jobs out there right now. Remote also. I say pass the word about what UHC is doing with sending jobs overseas so people will use other insurance companies. If we get enough people to switch insurances, other companies will benefit by getting the members and they will have to open new positions which will benefit us. Good luck to everyone! I heard there is more layoffs Wed and Thurs. of this week. I wish everyone the best! I was laid off middle of January. I have been doing 'chores' around the house while going to school and looking for a job. I did my bathroom over myself for 200.00 bucks. Make time for the projects you never had time for and use the time wisely to get those projects done. Use the time as a stepping stone to bettering your home, yourself while getting into a career again that you will love! Don't let depression get to you. I lost my dog of 13 years two weeks after getting laid off also. Keeping myself busy has helped in not getting depressed. I have PTSD and it is very easy to fall into the depression mode. Don't let yourself do that. Busy, busy, busy!! I had to laugh as my supervisor asked me before leaving if I needed to talk to the department that helps with mental health (EPS or EPA, I think) I said why, so an Indian can ask me why I am depressed and then answer him by, ya, you took my job. I said, I don't think so supervisor. Not much common sense by UHC. Bigger, better and beyond UHC!

In MN, if you get 12 weeks severance, unemployment won't start until the 13th week.

I was denied unemployment due to the fact that I received a severance, apparently won't qualify until they consider that severance 'run out' or something.

You can apply as soon as you're no longer employed.

And I'm sure the rules may differ from State to State.
