Many companies will use the pandemic as the excuse to clean house of the huge numbers of employees that have been added in the "Fashion" years.

Young people that like to carry laptops and Ipads around .....one handed ..looking earnest....with an anxious look on their faces...being woke...contributing nothing...always hiring more of their species...to hopefully guard against what is now happening.

The Question..."What is it that you do again".."Oh...well were you aware that 5 people gave me that exact same answer"...."How much do we pay you....what was your Travel and Expense nut....wow.

You could easily RIF 15,000 and not miss a beat, reorg the divisions, scale back SKU's by 40%, I mean you do not care about Retail Traffic bait anymore, focus on the real problem...a disrupted Supply Chain....especially in Apparel....dump 6 people off the Board that are just Dead Weight....sell Converse before it becomes too competitive....maybe buy some of these great small brands...that are going to go belly up...leverage the Direct Platform...be a Sporting Goods Amazon.

One thing JD knows very well....Technology is a joke...a crutch...Service Now's success is\was based on showing companies ......quickly, your investment in technology is an out of control disaster.

Many of these great small brands will perish because they can not upgrade engagement or logistic technology, but these brands are filled with the same type of "Jeff Johnson like" dreamers, authentics, just the recipe for reviving Nike.

LOL, cancelling the Olympics will SAVE Nike a ton of wasted spend!

Will Donahoe and the board have any choice but to lay off a significant number of employees? I doubt it.

That would be ideal, and wildly unrealistic. Sadly this will go well beyond 1 to 2 months. Without a vaccine, virus will come back in waves. Can't see how companies avoid significant layoffs, even with government support. Buckle up.

Let's consider an alternative. COVID-19 significantly impacts the economy for the next month...maybe two max, and then the bottom is found and things recover. John Donahoe decides not to lay off any workers and continue as usual showing resilience and instilling trust in him as the new CEO of Nike, and Nike comes out on top better than before, while other companies wallowed away in fear?

See y’all closing all retail stores for a while. Conspiracy theory: just another ploy to drive up Digital direct numbers.

@loy+13NsWtiw nailed it. Suspect significant RIF. Could be good in some areas. Move to Zero.

True

Well, it's going to halt the release of apparel that was in the pipeline because of manufacturing slowdowns.

True

If Japan decides to cancel the Olympics that will also be a big economic hit

True

I wouldn't be surprised if layoffs aren't being seriously considered

I'd add:
cons:

  • global supply chain issues, we are exposed
  • contraction in spending (consumer hurting)
  • 60% of usa households depend on hourly wages (will get disrupted if there are quarantines like the rest of the world have) - see the bullet above
  • lack of productivity (remote work is cool, i think it's less productive - i have no studies or hard data to support this claim, it's just my gut)
  • commerce speed will slow down - everything will happen slower
  • sports events cancellations / no attendance (this will affect the brand, sales at the stadiums, etc.) - this is already a problem in Europe, Serie A soccer league is playing with no spectators already. Ligue 1 in France, The Swiss Super League, etc. More leagues are considering the same. The USA will follow.
  • cashflow will hurt, they will do layoffs

Pros:

  • less pollution
  • more online shopping (unless people freak out about deliveries)

Well, it's going to halt the release of apparel that was in the pipeline because of manufacturing slowdowns. If Japan decides to cancel the Olympics that will also be a big economic hit, not to mention the loss of a major branding opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if layoffs aren't being seriously considered since Donahoe's in the hot seat with this being the first major challenge in his new role.
