Are the proposed cuts to benefits in the UK a step too far?

The benefits are sometimes given to get people in a position as NOV will not pay the correct salary, a few have been done this way but it creates problems later on, like now
Oh so "cutting them" to match what others have been making elsewhere is bad? To hell with car allowances and fuel cards, carry your own weight like the rest of the slugs or find a new job
Hey Optomist you are bang on the money - too many fat cats in this company milking it and the cow is dry. It’s time for a restructure of management in the UK, less revenue equates to less VPs, directors and other scroungers. The fuel cards are just the first to go I wager.
I’d rather lose a few benefits and keep my job. For most it will only be the share of NI savings on the pension which will be a noticeable financial loss. Too many people get car allowances and fuel cards for roles which don’t involve travel so I’m all for them being removed.
Sales staff, Managers and directors get car allowances of between £500 to £750 per month and full fuel paid (personal and business). They pay income tax on this benefit so it is basically part of their salary with a value of £10K on average.
This benefit used to be limited to the top level of managers but over the last 10 years it has been given out to basically anyone with manager in their title
Is a car allowance and fuel a benefit ? Who gets those and what are they worth ?
Its not free its paid for through National insurance contributions and wait times for care are often very long.We have a private healthcare system which is paid for through insurance that basically allows you to skip the waiting lists and get immediate treatment.
So yes we do need benefits.

Why does the UK even need benefits? I thought there's an amazing government run health care system provided FREE of charge?

Depends if you never get ill and need treatment or you don't need a decent pension and as long as you don't die in service everything should be fine.
