Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco announcing layoffs due to Coronavirus

I just heard that Cisco will shortly be announcing a number of layoffs in response to the Coronvirus situation and the prospect of declining revenues.

Anyone know which areas will be targeted ? I am hearing that it will be a lot of people in IT, services and development.

I can confirm three things: That prior approved Q4 budgets were recalled/slashed, where several people on my team were let go - including me. That there is now or will be any moment a BLUE BADGE hiring freeze. And finally that there is a RED BADGE hiring freeze through the month of MAY, as of now.

Wow, that's shocking. I know my SOW was approved & signed for Q4, but I know they can cancel SOW's at any time even if they were approved and funded.

There's been a hiring freeze for blue badges since the mandatory work from home policy went into effect with exceptions for business critical needs with Sr VP approvals, so it's old news that a hiring freeze is in place. Pretty much the same for red badges.

Chuck and the ELT just stated last night that they'd extended the severance package for those LR'd back in Feb until July 24th. If you're going to get LR'd by Cisco, now is the time for it. My LR from years prior left me looking for work at Thanksgiving and Christmas which is typically a slow hiring period.

Care to share the details of your severance package? How does it compare with the normal Cisco LR package?

After many many years here, I can confirm Cisco jumps to layoffs as the one solution for all problems, so this is not a surprise at all. What is the surprise, is saying that they weren’t going to have any layoffs - which is already proven as I speak to you now.

Any more info about this? Several companies are slashing employees as many as 15-20%.

I think the original poster got it wrong. It will rather be "let's stick together in those hard times" for now - but when the pandemic is over then the layoffs will start right away and way deeper ones.. Mark my words people.

Half of the Cisco SE , BU Engineering clowns that get laid off are useless . Not sure why they hire them in first place. Lazy, arrogant and useless. Customers and Partners have hard time dealing with these jackass's. These BU and SE engineers look down upon Partner Engineering teams. Never ready to hear the reality from the field. Good Luck. I am happy with CR making his 10th house than paying even $50K to these engineering nutjobs. Cisco needs to go back to Partner Lead engineering model. Webex Calling BS , Webex Contact center is a bad dream from these Cisco Engineers. If Cisco just made the platform that has better compatibility with major cloud vendors, compatibility with Microsoft and lets Partners deploy it in cloud or on prem and let them write their contracts with customers, that would have been a better model. Not everything is a f—ing webex. Chuck will get rid of this madness. Listen to enterprise customers Cisco.

McKinsey destroys whatever they touch. Been with two companies that used their "services" Clueless execs or taking bribes?

While Cisco is flawed and its layoff ritual a completely self-destructive, dysfunctional cultural element, I don't believe the culture is fundamentally evil. Like I said, it's just dysfunctional and numbers driven. They wouldn't use the covid thing as an excuse for cuts, they were probably planned long ago as the McKinsey vultures get paid going from BU to BU making their latest org recommendations.

It's just a fact of life that with its unimaginative approach to addressing the fundamental erosion of its hardware-led business model.

I've been in software dev for over 20 years and the previous comment is spot on. The quality of code and project support from off-shored assets is awful. No way do we save money using Indian (and other) software dev or other functions require high skill levels. The rework is extensive and it's almost always done by an American side staffer who saves the day. Most times the failure of off shored staff is covered up by mid level and the execs think it works great as a result. Big disconnect b/w what the front line staff know and what the senior leadership knows and thinks.

Outsourcing jobs is devastating from a PR position... Cisco still does it

Proof? I've seen a lot of companies outsource jobs, yet I've never seen any impacts to them from the negative PR.

But, I've been contacted by those same companies several years later wanting me to fill available openings because they learned that while the labor costs are cheaper, the time to get work completed lengthened and the number of bugs/problems increased due to poor communication between the teams wanting changes and the offshore developers tasked with making those changes. And the constant "make xyz change" followed 12 hrs later by "ok, we'll change xz" being followed by "No, I said xyz" followed by "Oh, I thought you meant yz". That 2-4 days of back and forth communications to get them to understand "xyz" before the work even gets started ends up making the costs more expensive than keeping the development in-house in country.

Someone needs to google “At Will Employment”. They don’t need a reason to terminate in the US.

Laying people off due to a medical situation is shaky from a legal standpoint and DEVASTATING from a PR position. If they do what is rumored here (doubt it), they will be tarred and feathered in the media.

Actually, I hope that they will extend the LR period and allow workers to stay on the books for another month. Few are hiring now. If Chuck did this, he would be CEO of the year.

Why a class action lawsuit? On what grounds?

Disability and (probably) age.

Chuck is saving up for his 7th house. Time to layoff more employees with families, you can't jeopardize his $26 million a year salary.
