Thread regarding IBM layoffs

No GDP

My FLM confirmed this week that it's true - no cash bonuses for IBMers this year. "Top performers" - whatever that means - will get stock. No word as to how much, but when friends my age get cash bonuses in the tens of thousands every year for just doing their jobs and I get zero for going above and beyond, I think IBM can take their stock and shove it up their azz. If this is their way of downsizing without having to pay unemployment, it's going to work. Im out this year. FU IBM.

No GDP in Belgium + the intention of management to layoff staff. Number of impacted employees not yet clear.
If IBM Belgium thinks this will motivate the staff that remains, they really need to re-think.

Hehehe Yep, I wouldn't want any IBM stock options at this price. It has only one way to go.

Do you recall about 5 years back when they insulting gave everyone a few shares of that c-appy stock and after like half a decade the entire sum was worth some pitiful amount. Seems like it would cost them more to dole out those couple of shares than it's worth.

Hopefully they give top performers Microsoft or Apple Stock.

@3glv. You will get no money this year. GDP is not being paid out per Ginni’s remarks. Don’t worry though. She will still get hers. She did mention that “top performers” will receive stock but she was completely vague on what defines “top performer” and the amount and type of “stock.” I’m sure whatever it is, it will be completely insulting. Checkpoint goals are meaningless. My only goal this year is to leave.

I had no negative marks on my checkpoint and a couple exceeds, does this mean GDP or no?
Is there anyway to find out this information from the website?

When I was at IBM, we would be lucky to get 1-2K of GDP, if we got anything at all. It always came with the message that we were lucky to still get a paycheck. Now, I get ~50K worth of RSUs every year. I knew it was an insult at IBM, just never knew the degree of it.

This has been hiding in plain sight for years. When I worked at IBM, the conversation would always go something like this: “You did great, but the pool is small this year and I have to slice it up among everyone equally, but at least we have jobs!”

Meanwhile the upper exec’s pulling in 7 figure bonuses on the same corporate performance metrics. Figure it out yet? Where are the execs bonuses coming from? Look at other companies and their investment in the employees it’s an eye opener.

Ginni used any employee bonus money for her golden parachute. You can’t fault her too much, she’s a product of environment. Her father disliked her mother so much he skipped town when she was a kid. Her mother was never home and Ginni had to look after her siblings. Ginni never had kids and it shows. She has no connection with employees, families, and what creates culture. A family man (or woman) CEO would treat staff like family and be an all star, compensating and motivating staff, with the favorable results that follow.

Most IBMers are constantly figuring out what task they plan on doing a purposeful c-appy job on this month as Ginni puts the screws to them once again.

@kxk. Totally agree. We are partly to blame for staying with such employer. After all, checkpoints are not transparently assessed and there is a lot of favoritism.

@nik this has nothing to do with low performers.

What the hell did you expect? IBM results have being complete sh– and are trending in the wrong direction. I don't blame the workers - its was Rometty and the entire executive team for leading this mess. All the fundamentals of IBM are wrong and its all unravelling.

Workers can of course move on though and they should if they want to see a bonus in the future. There is no future at IBM.

No GDP, but Yes to Agile? That's when you know you work for a company that's clueless.

@tmm I have received similar feedback as @1me from my management and my understanding is the same as yours. Numbers contribute to the team, checkpoint determines your rank in the team. Your team may/may not get selected if it isn’t performing well overall. We’re back to “stack and rank”

@lme So it's based on Checkpoint ratings, not 9 Box or attainment of financial targets? But it's also based on group performance so even if you were rated EXCEEDS on every dimension you may not get anything if the org you're in didn't do well? Everything at IBM is a Catch-22.
BTW, any manager who has not submitted Checkpoints for their people yet should be fired. They were due over a month ago. Do your goddam jobs people!

I report to a VP and he is telling us that the amount is based on what you got last year and being handed out automatically based on taking a cut of the people at the “top” of the checkpoint ratings. The only things managers have control over is how they give out checkpoint ratings. He claims he doesn’t know what the cut off is for the “top performers” but he would reveal that it is being rolled up at a higher level so one individual team might not see anything and one might see a large percentage.
Also he said many first line managers in our organization haven’t even submitted checkpoint ratings for their staff so they have had to disqualify whole teams from the process. Shame.

Just another way to save a few $$$ and push people out the door. Compare this approach to Microsoft, E&Y, Amazon or other IBM competitors, and it is clear why morale and overall company performance stinks. Ginni continues her long tradition of screwing the employees.

Anyone know if this stock will be outright shares or will it be RSUs with a vesting period?
I asked my manager and he did not know, nor did he know what constitutes a "top performer". In fact it sounds like no one knows anything and everyone was surprised by the announcement in Ginni's kickoff. Managers who didn't watch the video probably don't even know this change is happening and are still waiting to get the notification to do GDP.
