Negotiating the Severance Offer

Has anyone had any luck negotiating a severance offer at Macy’s?

If so, who did you work with and what were you able to obtain?

LOL, you don't negotiate a severance agreement.

I've laid off people for Macy's a number of times. They're super buttoned up when it comes to these things. You have a better case if you're being fired in a one-off scenarios. That's why it's so hard in Macy's to fire a non-performer. As a manager, you have to work on collecting reams of documentations before you can fire anyone. I used to be ecstatic when a poor performer did something dumb like s-xual harassment or ethical violation since it's an express route to firing him.

For mass layoffs, you don't stand a chance. They've done the legal reviews necessary to cover the bases. Although the managers already knew who they want to retain or offer relo, Legal/HR made them create a set of independent criteria to apply to the team and score accordingly and come up with the answer to create the appearance of no-bias.

In short, you don't negotiate. Just sign and find another job. Life is better outside Macy's.

I agree with the last post. Unless you have a specific labor violation that you can prove, you don't likely have a case. The company is a seasoned expert at avoiding legal risk when letting people go.

Take the severance...

Severance is a carrot that’s dangled to avoid a lawsuit. A threat of suing may get a little more of you had somewhat of a foundation but that’s only when the PR fallout would be worth paying you more. In this case the PR is already bad enough. If you can afford to live without the severance and think you may have a case then see a lawyer. If not, then sign and walk away.

It’s clear they were most favorable to the recent employees from Home Depot and Walmart! Over paid! Vs those here 21+yrs. oh and those that created the policy..bet they joined only in the last 4yrs. Hal got $2M for running Macy’s into the ground!

According to what's posted on the US Dept of Labor's website, "Severance pay is often granted to employees upon termination of employment. It is usually based on length of employment for which an employee is eligible upon termination. There is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for severance pay."
