Low Decline for last 10 Years

  • poor decisions from corporate
  • too many young moved up the ladder with very little experience
  • DM did very little to help the stores
  • no strategy except cutting hours for employees and more workload for managers

@1pbj+13mnyHe8 is right. Upper Executives are asked to pound the Sales Managers, Merchandise Team Managers, and Receiving Managers with workload and expectations that are not realistic. I would not do that to people who reported to me so I left. I feel bad leaving them there but there is no option. I won't pound and I received warnings that were headed towards formal discipline. I could see whats happening and left first.

@1pbj+13mnyHe8 great post! The little guys don't matter because everyone is replaceable is the "line". No matter what happens the "leader" finds cover and the little guys look bad and take the fall. How long will this continue? These behaviors changes cultures within stores and affect moral!

DMs only helped lazy managers. Hardworking managers that put 10 to 12 hour shifts got no help.

Position: Sales manager/MTM
Years of Service: 8 years
Store Volume: A+
Worked 12 hour days (not including work taken home) while my counterparts worked 8. Received the same raise of 1-2% if any. Cuts every year but more workload added. Feel really bad to those I left behind last year, but relieved I left when I did. VPSM did nothing to balance the load, or give better better merits to those who worked harder. Magic 6? Poof gone too. The higher up you are, the more its all for show and how much you can flex your muscle on the little guys.

Because upper management at Macy's couldn't make a good choice if given the choic between a million dollars or a hemorrhoid.

This sounds very familiar to what started at Kroger 6 years ago. Same strategy in promoting younger corporate leaders with No store or division experience who no fault to them, haven't experienced enough economic swings to lead through the tough times. Unfortunately, Kroger just named a Board member from Macy's. Any thoughts on her?

Large and legacy companies don't die quickly.

If you still work at Macy's, don't hope for a turnaround unless they replace Jeff with someone who's willing to take a big risk with a new vision that may or may not work. With this leadership, you're getting a rerun of true north strategy, which boils down to "let's survive by getting smaller while clutching to our outdated stores and aging merchandising ideology".

Cause they don’t know what to do. They only look at what looks hood on paper. Not technology. Looks good to cut. Looks good to start concepts store. Ask your self this question. Are customers waiting around for that new concept store ? No ! They don’t care. Just get it to them in two days.
