Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Learn from me - Class of 2019

I was laid off back in October 2019 and it happened on a Wednesday. I got a 15 min meeting notice with my VP put on my calendar when I got into the office. Telecommuters had their meeting over the phone.

Like another poster said, if you're laid off from UHC, you'll get 2 weeks of pay and will be paid for 40 hours of PTO. Anything over 40 hours is lost and they won't pay it out to you. You'll get a lump sum severance payment based on your years of service and pay grade. However, the severance payment isn't given to you until 2-3 pay periods (4-6 weeks) AFTER your last paycheck which really s—s.

A couple weeks after the layoff, you'll also get a check for any money that was taken out of your paycheck for the employee stock purchase program.

If you're affected by a layoff, apply for your state's unemployment benefits as soon as you can. It's not much but it does help. Also be prepared for the cost of continuing your benefits through COBRA. The cost of COBRA is astronomical!

Same here June of 2019. Took for ever to get my severance package. Waited almost 2 months. Minnesota doesn’t pay PTO over 40 hours so lost some of mine. California pays you all of it.

I agree with everything except for the waiting period for my severance. My last day was 1/2, received my last paycheck and severance 1/10

Laws vary by state. CA is one of the few states that make the company pay out all accrued PTO. In the past, the company's policy was to pay out 40 hours--they don't actually have to pay out anything if the state you're in doesn't require it--and you lose anything over that. I don't know what the policy is now with such massive layoffs

October 2019 for me. Best thing that happened to me but I certainly know that is not the case for everyone! I had 10 years with UHC.

It looks like in California they have to pay out all PTO. Not sure about any other states.

Never take COBRA. Apply for Obamacare. Being let go is your qualifying event!!
