Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Escorting people off the premises should be ilegal

I mean layoffs are one thing, being inhumane is another. A coworker that was also a good friend of mine got laid off this morning, and was escorted off the premises by a security guard like he was a f—ing war criminal or something. Even though I survived today's layoffs (at least for now) this was lierally one of the worst experiences of my life.
I don't want to go into everything that is wrong with the way these layoffs are conducted, and into the reasons why they happened, but there is no reason why they couldn't be done without the unnecessary humiliation.
I got to ask, how is this even legal and how have these practices never been contested in court. A child could tell that this is against basic human rights.

It is done to protect company assets and only happens in certain positions. Mostly sales, contracting, and high level executives. Anyone who has access to premium information, customer information, contract rates, legal info.. will be escorted out given only the opportunity to take their belongings under supervision. The same would have happened if the person resigned. That is the policy in UHC an many other companies.

I think the threat of workplace violence makes this necessary. But also incredibly humiliating and I don’t like it at all

Reason is they put a bullet to the head. Do you want a paycheck and put food on the table/pay bills next month with little severance or contest and maybe in a year or two after lawyers are done you get paid what's left. Good luck everyone. Put salt to injury we are hiring. See the job board.

I had this happen at a job before
I was walked outside to be told and they weren’t going to let me back in the building to get my personal belongings

It was an American thing- treating former employees as criminals and escorting them off property.

UHG should be disgusted. I was laid off in 2019 and it was the best thing that has happened to me. They executives will burn in hell.

it's common practice in business, two scenarios. a) an employee where there is suspected risk; b) a large number of layoffs on the same day and you just need it to move along. been there, done that, a couple of fortune 50's.

What we need is people to take a risk and not sign the severance package. Then take them to court. If you sign it though you cannot contest anything about it.

There must be a reason for that to happen. Check your friendship at the door. My guess is there is something behind that approach that you are not aware of, this is not common practice. That is just silly what you are saying here about human rights violation.
