Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I was laid off last year

After a decade of service in engineering and nothing but exceptional ratings until they brought in the People Deal.

I’m grateful for the experience, but you know what I’m p-ss-d about? It is simply, every job I’ve applied to, I’ve ended up competing with one or more Cisco laid off engineering professionals!

Cisco, can you please stop laying off people, because it is really cheapening the value of Cisco experience on a resume!

I was LRed in 2014. Worked with great people, but manager was a useless po_ He never had anyone from the team into a manager position. No one was allowed to grow unless he personally saw a benefit. Good news is that he was finally LR's himself a few months ago. I'm formally retired now and wish you all luck in the next hunger games event! May the force be with you, you're going to need it.

I have to completely disagree about the value of Cisco on your resume. You just have to apply to the right companies that are experiencing similar challenges as Cisco. There are plenty of them and they value your Cisco experience good or bad as long as you can position how you've learned from it and can help them not make similar mistakes.

In a few years, the value of “Cisco” on a resume will be like the value of Lucent and Nortel of yesteryear! Good luck for the little engineering talent that remains!

I worked at Cisco for 16 years and saw it change. Cisco politics are some of the worst. You never know when your job will end thanks to the frequent LRs. Several managers could care less about their reports or their job function, consider yourself fortunate if you have a manager who does. Most only care about playing in bureaucracy to promote themselves, their friends or family members on H1Bs or L1s. More of a do as I say versus say as I do culture. Cutting cost is more important than attracting talent. No accountability for those who are making decisions which threaten revenues or causing attrition. Rearrangement of the deck chairs it's business as usual. From talking with others it also seems every company Cisco acquires eventually inherits these same problems. I loved working at Cisco until I didn't.

AT&T and Verizon seem to have the only hiring managers that respect Cisco on your resume

You have to sell against Cisco being on your resume, not trumpet it. A bit of advice. It has little cache' except with smaller direct competitors. Otherwise viewed as a dinosaur.

The fact that you come back here to complain is proof you aren't good enough to work at Cisco.

Cheapening? Ha! More than a couple of years at Cisco can be a red flag for some hiring managers.
