Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Is a job at Optum a good first time job?

This would be for someone in a call center and with very little previous work experience. No college coursework taken. Would it be OK to come here and learn?

definitely do it. i'm not going to lie and say it's a good company to work for. don't count on any bonuses they say you'll be paid. you may find yourself in a team where supervisors play favorites and you're not it. the call center positions here sound tough. from what I've read on forums, employees are monitored and the systems don't work or have old info. it's better than no job and you need to get your foot in somewhere. customer service can get you into many different companies. take the job if offered but keep looking. look at job postings, there are banks and retail looking for people with 1 year of customer service for positions. these ask for experience vs degree.

Disagree about firing. It’s all based on management. Many have had CAP pressure out of nowhere. Many have been treated unfairly. HR isn’t always there for people. Layoffs are terrible. Firings are terrible too but don’t always assume management acts rightly. Sometimes they really are out to get people and create such toxic spaces and honestly pick any employee and you can justify a firing with enough time and pressure.... Reserve judgement until you’ve been in their shoes.

I'll reiterate what the other person said. It's incredibly hard to get fired. You would have to do something like show up to work drunk or threaten physical violence etc. There have been some major screw ups by people and they kept there job.

Great opportunity with no real documented skills. And job security? There is probably a lot considering all you need is a pulse to have a job at that level, and hard as heck to get rid of someone who doesn't perform. You can be coached over and over for years and have longevity. Good luck!

I think it's good for 3 to 6 months, but I've seen enough Information to show that they're doing everything they can to automated it through artificial intelligence. So the roles will be as eliminated as quickly as possible.

If you need a paycheck and you don't have many other job prospects then it's a ok first job. Call center work is stressful and you have to hit your targets. They record all the calls and ding you for minor things. You have to work odd hours and rarely get the PTO you want around holidays and stuff because they need have coverage. People churn and burn out of these roles all the time. These jobs are expendable and UHC will let you go at any time. A lot of these call center rep jobs are moving overseas. If you're looking for a long term job or career path, UHC isn't it.

Just some food for thought.... I'd recommend looking at the trades (plumbing, hvac, electrical, mechanic, etc) or other areas. Several of my nieces and nephews are getting associates degrees and planning to go into these fields because they know that they'll always be able to get work. There's several years of grunt work, apprenticeship and paying your dues, but they know that in 10 or so years, they can eventually have their own business and make bank. My brother has been a plumber for over 25 years and can pretty much spend his winters down south now.

If all you need is a paycheck then yeah. All call centers are pretty similar whether its for a Cable Company, Bank, Insurer, etc. Don't expect anything more than a pretty demanding thankless job and it is fine.

No. Do not take any job at UnitedHealth Group unless you live offshore. Decline the position.

If you need a job, then take it. It's worth it for a paycheck, benefits and networking. Bonuses and pay increases aren't guaranteed and are pretty minimal. Learn as much as you can in your position and then after 1-2 years start looking for another job.
