Some contractors were told the same week that they would be laid off some got a few weeks notice. There were a lot of contractors laid off but what upper management is not focusing on is that there are still 20-30% contractors in many teams because these are essential contractors. Some of these are truly doing work that they only know and some of these are friends with the bosses and got to stay when other good contractors good laid off. Next is employees, they were going to try to wait to see how many employees retired in 3rd and 4th qtr but because the company is cash negative upper management has decided to go ahead and start with those that were put in the bottom which is expected to be about 8% of the employees. There are about 5000 employees in EMIT so at 8% that would be around 400 EMIT IT people who lose their jobs plus about 8% from the other parts of the business. Depending on the price of oil next year and cash flow of the company there could be additional layoffs. In addition to this all the sourcing leads in the company have been asked to accelerate moving jobs to managed service providers if possible.

There's no difference between a layoff or a furlough. In both cases, you are not welcome on company property and you aren't getting paid, indefinitely.

What was your role as a contractor for them? Curious what part of the company is having layoffs.
