Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

We Hide The Hurt Behind A Smile

Jeff, it was good to see us taking action in response to the corona virus, closing stores and taking care of our customers, hourly leaders and colleagues, directing corporate, regional, and divisional executives and staff to office from home so that almost everyone in our Macy's family can protect themselves and their loved ones and reduce the risk of catching and spreading the virus. So why are we requiring salaried store level executives to work together in their buildings every day when we are closed due to the virus? Do you know that region and division leaders are requiring us to work on projects like organizing clearance and Last Act racks, remerchandising, unloading trucks, and otherwise exposing ourselves to potential infection? None of the tasks we are doing are remotely business critical in nature. Do you know we are expected to take "before" and "after" pictures of the trivial work we are doing and post them to Yammer or Teams sites to "show" that we are being productive?

Regional and Divisional executives who are safely in their homes don't know what to do with themselves. In light of these new circumstances, they have instead adopted the role of micro managing store managers and their few leaders who are forced to work together with hourly phone calls, text messages, and requests for Yammer, and Teams postings as proof that we are staying productive. Look at the pictures Jeff, see how many of our store leaders are working in close proximity to their teams, even giving high fives and posting snaps of themselves standing in tight groups with fake smiles. We are worried about the company and our families; we have new leaders we don't know well enough to tell how we feel. We don't want to lose our jobs, but we also don't want to die or have people in our family die because for some reason the company and leaders we know and respect seem to value the health and well-being of everyone in the organization above ours.

It is estimated that at least 50,000 people in the US now have the virus and as you know, we already have several locations with confirmed cases. We need a little help here Jeff. How about showing the same level of concern for store leaders that we are showing for everyone else? If not, how about you and the other senior executives leave the safety of your homes and come out to the stores and work side by side with us to complete this less than crucial workload? If you and the other senior leaders choose to come out and work with us, you won’t have to ask for pictures and postings with fake smiles showing minor accomplishments, pictures that fail to depict the internal struggle of having to weigh the risk that we, our teams, and our familiar face in regards to contracting the virus against the risk of losing our jobs, we can instead all face the same risks and live or die together.

I’ve been a Macy’s employee for many many years and I can honestly say I’ve been treated very well and learned a lot. These are difficult times that were living in right now and I know this virus is causing I saw a lot of stress and anxiety and hopefully with the stimulus package what I’m hoping is Our CEO can realize no a lot of good people a lot of hard-working people especially the colleagues that go above and beyond their duties should not be given A pay cut should they lose loss of avg hours a week. I Say this with the greatest respect for the people of the workforce that are on the front lines, speak up you all have a voice especially the ones who give 110 percent and you know who you our. A lot of us workers get paid minimum to say 16 for the majority I suspect unless you e been there for along time as I have. I feel ultimately it’s a slap in the face to us because we make less and a lot of employees have children and need to put good on the table. I was told 28 hours myself and when I called hr services I’m being told 56 hours for 3 weeks. I believe we work for an exceptional company but I don’t believe cutting hours of the sales associates while we’re out is exceptional thinking. My feeling is they need to do the right thing. I know the ceo is not taking any pay I get that but I also know he is way well compared to others as well as the higher ups so a pay cut won’t k–l them. You know in morning meetings I always here the manager say if it wasn’t for you none of this would be possible. It’s not about me it’s about you the team well I hope they can see this and realize without a majority of the hard working sales people in place throughout our company that excell in credit and amazing customer service skills that this isn’t the time for cutting the backbone of this companies hours. It’s not enough to live and you might as well lay off or furlough everyone so that way hopefully unemployment can pay them better for hopefully just a short time until we go back to work safely. Masks and gloves and sanitizer would be nice. We have no idea who comes In these stores l, could be someone with this covid-19. Well I’ve said about everything there is to say do I love Macy’s yes I do. To you Jeff, I prey you do the right thing. If your full time give us the 28 hours a week I’m sure most people can live with it and for part time at least 15 hours until this crisis is over with. And when we do go to work. Give us the equipment to be safe. May God bless each and everyone of you and stay safe and hope and trust everything will work itself out.

It’s actually pretty easy to let someone go if you lie and manipulate things. Most people complain because the workload doesn’t match the amount of time needed. And that’s not complaining, it’s being realistic and observant. Leadership isn’t saying these observations are complaints, are thus not legitimate, and to get it done...and if you don’t get it done it’s your head. Maybe if the asinine workload and strategy was eliminated, people would be happier, more enthusiastic, and the optics on productivity would be better. Having 16k markdowns, 8-10 L-carts a day of new receipts, a shoe audit that takes 4 hours daily, signing/pricing 3 times a week, etc. with a threadbare team in one week is id–tic and sets people up to fail. Nothing we do is breaking the atom, but just dumping a whole bunch of things to do when you can’t possibly finish it with the staff you have makes the job way harder than it should be. The expectations are unrealistic. The whole stop complaining culture at the company is toxic and isn’t reflective for most other professions that I’ve come across. The company likes to think they’re organized, but it’s a disjointed mess. Things are planned out poorly and leadership equates to passing the buck.

Red badge here...

Shame on some of you who are complaining. I take pride in going to work and working for my money and this company. I support whatever way I can. This company has given me so many opportunities and growth throughout my career and I'll do all I can to represent Macys. There are companies that are just letting everyone go. And then there are companies who are trying to hold on by a thread.

If you dont feel safe coming to work, you have every right to speak up and not feel there will be repercussions. Coming on here and claiming your managers are going to fire you is a lie. If theres one thing you learn working at Macys, it's that, it's very very hard to let someone go.

If there is a reason you'll get let go, it's not because you didnt feel safe coming to work during a pandemic. It's because you are a bad Manager and all you do is complain and not take initiative to drive your business. Hence, what you are doing in this site, complaining!

If you feel that your coworkers are not keeping their distance while working, SPEAK UP, dont just come on this site and complain about it!!!

Lesson of the day: if you're not happy at Macys, nothing and no one is holding you back from leaving!! You are VERY replaceable!

I worked projects with 6 managers today. We were next to each other pulling Job Out. No protective measures taken. One was coughing the whole one. Really?

I hear the RVPs and DVPs say on the calls it’s not mandatory, but as soon as the call ends.... the store manager is saying how disappointed they will be, if any of us chooses to self isolate... I mean for the safety of our families!! They bad talk the ones who aren’t there. They talk about reviews! How can I not show up!? My job is on the line.
I see below and agree- give me a paycut and send me home. Yes, also to hostile work environment! SEND US HOME. I literally just worked hand and hand with 8 people, completing tasks and, hearing about their weekend and where they went—- ate lunch ALL with them in the office- I excused myself. THERE IS NO SELF DISTANCING.

They keep saying they can’t force us to be there.... but the store managers talk sh– about the ones who left and say they won’t get promoted or they will find a way to get them fired after this is done. It’s become hostile work environment. It’s nit about the physical work, I don’t mind doing it! I do it all the time to help my team.... it’s a great way to exercise and stay busy..... BUT WE ALL WANT TO GO HOME!!!! WE ARE SCARED AND WANT TO BE WITH OUR FAMILIES. We have no protective equipment or sanitizer. Give me a paycut like my people and send me home so we can ALL GO BACK TO WORK SOONER!

Red Badge here.
I’ve done various labor intensive tasks while we are closed, downloading trucks etc. It’s actually been eye opening how long it takes our normal team to accomplish these things and have a bad attitude. I have called my team to check on them and a few have said “now you see how hard it is...” and I reply “all is good here, we are making progress without any issues.” I appreciate my people and have always done the work I expect of them, but it’s pretty evident many are poisoning the well with their attitudes.
As for pay, I would rather take a pay cut and help stop this virus... but I even been ordered and my job has been threatened if I choose to stay home- imagine that- we are being threatened if we “jump ship.” Even though I have a child and mother with an immune disorder at home. Many of you don’t k is what we are going through. We want to go home.

Well said. I am one of those execs dling trucks and trapped at work. Our store manager says whoever bails ship don't expect to get promoted.

Red Badge checking in!

I am one not in office but rather on my floor with my teams doing all that has been stated in this thread. Markdowns truck fufilment etc...

Eye opening this week when I learn I’m the only one who knew myship and how to pick Fufilment.

At beginning of week I did feel resentment and anger of having to go.

By Wednesday I felt calmer and actually this has been a nice distraction from the chaos in the world and has helped keep a routine somewhat normal.

We just closed our doors last Sunday until then we had contact (all of us) with countless customers and vendors. We’ve been exposed already......

I am following guidelines. I go to work then home until told not to show up anymore.

It is what it is....

It’s not rude to point out how this person is complaining. None of us should be working. At all. We’re not essential, and it’s important that we follow the rules the state and federal government roll out. I feel bad that they have to work. It’s awful. However, people are just pointing out the hypocrisy in the post. People are treated like garbage, micromanaged, etc from the managers. Now these managers realize how time consuming and thankless the job is, from markdowns to processing receipts to reorganizing the floors just to give busy work. Hopefully they have learned to be more humble, helpful, and more considerate of their associates. Maybe this will allow them to now walk the walk and actually lead positively instead of negatively. Treating people nicely goes a long way. I really hope some change their ways for the betterment of the business, and for their own selves. And I’m not going to be anonymous.

I am truly amazed at the ignorant, inconsiderate, rude, stupid and most of all in humane comments that are on here. From what I am reading it sounds like the health and well being of a person is determined by their pay grade! Get your head out of your a–. Have you educated yourself on the situation?! Have you seen what this crisis has done to the service industry. It’s caused immediate mass lay-off to those in that business. They are not sitting home collecting a check while the world gets thru this. Most of you sound really unhappy in your current position. I suggest you take this time to go find a job that makes you happy..... oh..... that’s right...... there may not be any out there when this is all said and done. The world is in crisis right now so shut your bitter mouth up.

Seriously, there are managers who disappear for hours. Some for meetings, some to shoot the sh–, etc. My store in Manhasset was notorious for having managers, I won’t name them, f— in the store when they were supposed to be working. It’s a f—ing joke.

You should stop complaining and be thankful that you are receiving your full salaries. Colleagues only receive 28 hours and only the minimum no commission. What really bother you is that you have to work you can't hide anymore like all of you have done for a long time. It could be worse. Be thankful and don't be so selfish.

Maybe this will be a lesson to MTM’s and the other management in the stores. Now you know what actual hard work feels like. Maybe now instead of sitting on your high horses and just giving out assignments while you chill in your offices, you can see where all of the hard work and results come from. Maybe Now you will APPRECIATE your teams! Good Jeff!

Please help the people who work so hard to make your bonus possible. After 15 years I make $35,000 and live alone in an expensive state CA. I could be evicted if I can't pay my rent. Do you have a conscience? Other companies have stepped up and paid their employees, but, of course, they were the ones who voluntarily closed because they were worried their employees would be at risk. Macy's closed after the order and is planning to open before the Governor said you can.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/19/business/retail-stores-open-bed-bath-and-beyond/index.html

Bed Bath and Beyond, under fire from its workers as one of the few retailers planning to stay open amid the coronavirus crisis, said late Thursday it will temporarily close more than half its stores.

The company will immediately close around 800 Bed Bath & Beyond stores until April 3. It will continue to pay its employees during that stretch.

Another 700 of its stores will continue to operate under shortened hours, including buybuy BABY, Harmon Face Value, and Bed Bath & Beyond stores that have health and personal care departments.

"We have no idea what is going on, we feel abandoned, and all our district and regional support are working from home," said one employee in Connecticut who, like others, spoke under the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation. "Associates are scared, frustrated, and have lost faith in the company to do the right thing and support us."

Retired sales manager here......the most important thing for anyone who is still working in the stores is to check the visual shop, janitorial supplies, first aid kits and AP offices to see if there are any face masks and any other items that could be deemed personal protective equipment. Especially in New York. Does Macys have cotton fabric bandanas in their inventory? This is an opportunity for Macy's to provide true leadership in this crisis of our lifetime.

I don’t feel bad for you guys. At all. Maybe now you’ll realize how insufferable and miserable you make your associates. Now you’ll know what it feels like to have unreasonable expectations foisted upon you and to be micro-managed. Now you’ll know what it’s like to get conflicting orders all the time.

This will bankrupt Macy’s and most likely have employees collect unemployment. It’s going to get far worse. They may give you a option to be laid off. But you don’t need to do mark downs on stuff that nobody will have money to buy. Nor visit the store in a long time. Send these people home.

Well said! I’m appalled that Macy’s would be forcing their store teams to continue working. This is a time to hunker down at home with family, stay safe and lower the curve so that our hospitals can accommodate those stricken.
At the end of the day..... do we really care if another truckload of private label, destined for markdowns, makes it to the floor over the next two weeks?
Priorities Macys!!
